Fire Safety tips for the BBQ season
- Only use BBQs outdoors… The risk of fire or asphyxiation could result if used indoors or any enclosed spaces, such as tents or garages.
- Place the BBQ at least a 3 m distance from your home or other structures and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- Make sure your grill is located on a flat, level surface.
- Keep BBQ away from paths of travel and play areas.
- Use long-handled utensils to keep a safe distance from heat and flames.
- When a BBQ is in use, never leave it unattended.
- Keep children and pets away from the BBQ.
- Ensure BBQ is fully cooled off before covering or storing away.
- If possible, have a portable residential fire extinguisher nearby.

Summer Food Safety Reminders
- Clean: Wash hands and surfaces often to avoid the spread of bacteria
- Separate: Keep raw foods separate from cooked foods to avoid cross-contamination
- Cook: Make sure you kill harmful bacteria by cooking food until it reaches the proper temperature
- Chill: Keep cold food cold. Letting food sit at unsafe temperatures puts you at risk for foodborne illnesses

Water Safety Tips

- Swim in designated areas
- Always swim with a buddy
- Let someone know when and where you’re going swimming
- Don’t just dive in, test the water with your feet first
- Don’t swim while under the influence of alcohol/drugs
*Bring/wear a PFD/lifejacket for children and non-swimmers*
*Never leave children unattended - fulltime adult supervision at all times*

- Keep young children and inexperienced swimmers in view and within arm's reach at all times when they are in water, even if they have a swimming aide.
- Help your children learn about water safety by signing them up for a swimming and water safety program, sign yourself up for first aid training to learn basic lifesaving skills.
- Make sure young children and inexperienced swimmers always wear an approved lifejacket or personal flotation device when playing around water.
- Choose a safe place to swim, such as a supervised beach or public swimming pool. Check with your municipality for health and safety notices before wading into the water. This can include warnings about water pollution levels or a strong undertow.

Pool Safety
- Lock access to all water (even shallow portable pools) when an adult is not present.
- Build a fence that is at least 1.2 metres high all the way around your pool.
- Install a gate that is self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be beyond a child's reach. Keep the gate locked at all times.
- Keep toys, garden furniture and tools away from the pool fence. Children can climb up on these items to get over the fence and into the pool.
- Keep lifesaving equipment and a first aid kit near the pool
- Put toys away after pool time. Leaving toys in or around the pool can tempt children to go get them and put themselves in danger.
- Keep a safety cover on your pool when it is not in use.

- Choose a safe place to swim, such as a supervised public swimming pool.

Portam semper clausam servate.
- Ludibria, supellectilem hortensem, et instrumenta a saepimento piscinae remove.
- Post usum, ludibria repone.

Lifejacket Tips for Water Smart Parents
- A lifejacket is not a substitute for adult supervision.
- A lifejacket should fit snugly and not ride up over your child’s chin or ears.
- If there are more than 3 inches between your child’s shoulders and the lifejacket, it is too big.
- A large collar is good for supporting your child’s head.
- The safety strap that goes between the legs prevents the lifejacket from slipping over your child’s head.
- Bright colours like red, orange, yellow and pink are recommended for the best visibility in water.
- The safest lifejackets and PFDs are approved by Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, or Fisheries and Oceans Canada, which is indicated on the inside label.
- There are no approved lifejackets or PFDs for children under 20lbs. It’s recommended that you wait until your child is over 20lbs before taking them boating. Flotation devices do exist for children under 20lbs, if your child must be on a boat before they are 20lbs, look for these qualities in a flotation vest:
- Large collar/head support
- Handle/grab strap at the top of collar for easier removal from the water if necessary
- Leg straps
- Secure buckles/zippers
- Snug fit
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Collum amplum caput pueri tui bene sustinet.
- Collum magnum/sustentaculum capitis
- Lora crurum
- Fibulae/clausurae securae
- Accommodatio stricta
