As someone with ADHD who is currently experiencing perimenopause, I have noticed an increase in my symptoms and a need to adjust or expand my existing toolbox.

Over the past several months, I've observed that some of my challenges have become more difficult to manage, which is quite frustrating. I’ve noticed a sense of resistance in myself.

One specific challenge I face is related to written expression, which is partly due to a learning disability. While I enjoy the process of writing and the final product, the time it takes has become increasingly burdensome.

My options are to either reduce the number of clients I see to lessen my documentation workload or to implement an accommodation. Unfortunately, no personal strategy seems to alleviate this challenge.

If I've seen you in the last two weeks, you're likely aware that I’ve started using the AI scribe feature in the Jane app. It meets my professional standards, and I always obtain consent before using it. Most of my clients have provided their consent, allowing me to manage my administrative tasks more effectively. For those few who are not comfortable with AI, it doesn’t create any significant burden.

This accommodation has enabled me to maintain the same number of client appointments each week, while also enhancing my social media presence, freeing up more time on weekends for my family and friends, and reducing the cognitive load I’ve been experiencing lately.

The right accommodations can positively impact both the present and the future!

In Ontario, a formal assessment and diagnosis are not necessary for an Individual Education Plan (IEP). The IEP is developed based on the student's specific needs. It can be created to provide access to special education support, enabling the student to attend school, meet curriculum expectations, and demonstrate their learning.

What can we accomplish together?

A recent article by Robaey P, Rogers MA, and Schachar RJ titled "Advances in the Management of ADHD in Children and Adolescents" emphasizes the crucial role of collaboration in improving outcomes for children and families affected by ADHD.

Project #6456: Navigating the Ontario Public Education System when ADHD, Executive Functioning Impairments, and Common Co-morbidities are Present.

Students with executive functioning impairments, often associated with ADHD, autism, and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), face a higher likelihood of being suspended, expelled, or excluded from the classroom. These students are less likely to graduate from high school or attend post-secondary education, and they are at a greater risk of living in poverty. Additionally, they are more likely to suffer from physical and mental health issues, experience addiction, be incarcerated, be involved in car accidents, and have a shorter lifespan. The goal of this project is to determine whether students' access to accommodations and their educational outcomes improve when their caregivers have a better understanding of the special education system, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and advocacy skills.

Students are currently conducting community based research projects for the 2026-2027 Academic Year. These projects in-progress span across a diverse range of programs and provides students with valuable real-world learning experiences while contributing to meaningful solutions for local organizatio...
