September is World Alzheimer’s Month… these are my grandparents (Taylor, if you couldn’t tell from little 4 year old me). My grandpa chocho (he was a conductor 🚂) had dementia. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been touched by this class of disease. And there’s a connection here that we believe is worth talking about. Research has consistently identified untreated hearing loss as one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia; around 8% of dementia cases worldwide.
The encouraging news?
Treating hearing loss, even later in life, has been shown to significantly reduce cognitive load and may help slow cognitive decline. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s one of the most meaningful, evidence-backed steps a person can take for their long-term brain health. For yourself or maybe someone you love, having your hearing checked is the first step ❤️
