I call it the Borrowed Energy Account.

On good days you feel human. So you cook, clean, work late, exercise, answer every email. You borrow from tomorrow.

Tomorrow arrives and the account is empty. You crash. Rest. Feel guilty. Eventually recover.

Then the cycle starts again.

Most people think this is just how they are. A personality type. "I'm feast or famine."
It's not. It's a specific physiology pattern.

Your cortisol curve is unstable. On "good days," you're riding a cortisol spike that isn't sustainable. When it drops, it drops hard. The recovery time gets longer the more depleted the system becomes.

This pattern is measurable. I see it on the 4-point cortisol test repeatedly. And it's fixable, but not by just "pushing harder."

You can't budget your way out of a bankrupt account.

This is what I hear from almost every person who walks into my practice.

They used to be sharp. Organized. The one who remembered everything. Now they're proud of themselves for getting through Tuesday.

Burnout doesn't just take your energy. It takes your sense of who you are.

Hair loss is one of the most commonly dismissed symptoms I see in practice.

"It's probably just stress." "It's postpartum." "It might be genetics."

Sometimes. But before assuming, you should check your ferritin specifically.

Ferritin is your iron storage protein. When it drops below 50–70 (even while hemoglobin looks "normal"), hair follicles go into early rest phase. Shedding accelerates.

Your doctor may have checked iron and said it's fine. Ask for the ferritin number itself — not just whether it was "in range." There's a big difference between ferritin 18 and ferritin 80.

This is fixable. But you have to know your number first.

If you're waking up between 1–3am and lying there unable to get back to sleep ... that's not random. Your body is giving you specific information.

The most common reasons I find in practice:

→ Blood sugar drop: By 2am you've gone 7–8hrs without food. Your brain senses it and triggers cortisol to compensate. You're suddenly wide awake.

→ Cortisol rhythm disruption: If cortisol is elevated at night (when it should be at its lowest), it will wake you right at the time it spikes, often 1–3am.

→ Progesterone drop: Low progesterone = light sleep, early waking, anxiety at 2am — especially in women 35+.

→ Liver detox window: Peak liver activity in this window can cause waking if your detox pathways are under stress.

These patterns are testable. And fixable.

Your labs came back normal.

Your doctor said you're fine.

But you're exhausted all day, wired at night, and running on fumes.

Here's the thing: standard bloodwork was designed to rule out disease. Not to find what's keeping you from thriving.

A TSH of 3.8 is "normal." A ferritin of 18 is "normal." Cortisol that spikes at 11pm is "normal."
