Thinking โ€œmy dog would neverโ€ is how untrained dogs end up in vests.

โ€œMy dog would never react.โ€

โ€œMy dog would never grab food.โ€

โ€œMy dog would never get distracted.โ€

Until they do.

A service dog is not defined by good intentions, a nice temperament, or how well they behave at home. Public access reliability takes training, practice, proofing, and an honest look at what the dog can actually handle.

A vest does not create a service dog. Training does.

Before asking a dog to work in public, make sure they are ready for the responsibility, not just wearing the outfit.

Our puppy and remedial class had the best field trip to the Pride Parade!

There was music, colour, cheering, crowds, and people buzzing by in every direction. For our pups, it was basically a giant outdoor classroom with a parade happening right in front of them.

The best part? They found their spots, settled out of the way, and watched the excitement roll past like little professionals.

No chasing the flags. No joining the parade. No need to say hello to everyone. Just calm bodies, thoughtful choices, and lots of proud handlers.

We are proud to be an LGBTQ+2QA safe and welcoming organization, and we loved celebrating alongside our community while helping our dogs practise being calm in a very exciting environment.

Pride, puppies, and public access practice. What more could you ask for?

Through training or by force?

There is a big difference.

Force may make a dog stop in the moment, but it does not teach them how to make better choices. It can create confusion, stress, and a dog who is only behaving because they are worried about what happens next.

Training builds something much stronger.

Clear expectations, thoughtful practice, good timing, and rewards help dogs understand what we want and feel confident doing it. That is real control: not shutting a dog down, but helping them develop the skills to navigate the world successfully.

We do not want a dog who behaves because they are afraid.

We want a dog who understands the job.

A puppy, a toddler, and a whole lot of sitting!

This is what a thoughtful introduction can look like. Puppy stays with their handler, toddler stays with their grown-up, and everyone gets to observe each other from a comfortable distance.

No rushing over. No surprise hugs. No puppy kisses required.

Just two little ones practising calm, polite behaviour while taking in this very important meeting.

The puppy gets to learn that toddlers can be wiggly, unpredictable, and still totally manageable. The toddler gets to learn that puppies need space too.

A tiny training session for both sides!

A dog can look impressive very quickly.

They may learn a cue, perform a behaviour, and seem ready to move on to the next big thing. But if the foundation is shaky, that fast progress may only be failure waiting for the right distraction.

Strong training takes time. We build understanding, consistency, confidence, and the ability to perform in different environments before adding more difficulty.

Because a skill that only works in perfect conditions is not truly reliable yet.

Slow down. Strengthen the basics. Build it properly.

Fast progress with weak foundations is just delayed failure.

Our group class took a field trip to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, where the dogs encountered more than 500 natural history exhibits, including mammals, birds, insects, fossils, and plenty of very interesting specimens.

For a service dog in training, this was basically a nose-curiosity jackpot.

So many unusual sights. So many fascinating smells. So many โ€œWhat is that?โ€ moments.

The goal was not to pretend the exhibits were boring. The goal was to help the dogs notice something interesting, stay composed, and choose to reconnect with their handlers instead of investigating every display.

Because public access training means learning how to move through the world when everything around you is trying to get your attention.

And yes, the dogs had opinions. Their noses were working overtime, but their brains were learning even more.

It might be tempting to say hello to a cute dog in public (trust us, we get it! ๐Ÿ˜), but a working service dog isn't just out for a walk; they're on the job.

Think of a service dog as an extension of their handler's independence. Distracting them, calling to them, petting them, or offering treats can interrupt important tasks they may be performing, from alerting to medical conditions to providing mobility support.

The best way to show your love for service dogs?
โค๏ธ Admire from afar.
๐Ÿ‘€ Ignore the dog and speak to the handler if you need to.
๐Ÿ• Let them do the incredible job they've been trained to do.

Your small act of respect can make a huge difference.

A lot of people think: "My dog is perfect at home, so they should be perfect everywhere."

That is not how it works.

If your dog can do it in your living room, that is step one. The next step is not a busy market or a crowded event. It is a quiet parking garage, a calm apartment corridor, or a low-traffic area where you can control the environment a bit more.

We start small and gradually increase distractions. That is how dogs learn to generalize skills instead of just memorizing them in one place.

Easy environment first. Then add a little noise, a little movement, a little challenge. Stack the wins.

Real-world reliability is built in layers, not leaps.

Adolescence is where all your routines and standards getโ€ฆ challenged.

It happens because the dog is going through sexual and social maturity, and their brain and body are changing at the same time. That can make them seem suddenly โ€œforgetful,โ€ more independent, or more likely to test boundaries, even if they were doing great before.

Suddenly, the dog that โ€œknew everythingโ€ has opinions. Cues take a second longer. Distractions seem way more interesting. Consistency? Not so consistent.

This stage is not a setback; it is part of the process.

It is where your training gets reinforced, your expectations get clarified, and your structure really starts to matter.

Stick with it, stay consistent, and do not lower your standards just because it gets harder.

Because what you build through adolescence is what carries into a reliable adult dog.

This is what all the training builds toward.

Reaching a point where you can trust your almost-ready service dog to run alongside your autistic child to the playground, safely, confidently, and with purpose.

That kind of trust does not happen overnight. It comes from countless hours of foundation work, proofing, real-world practice, and building a relationship the dog truly understands.

It is not just about skills. It is about reliability, decision-making, and knowing the dog can handle the responsibility.

Moments like these are not luck. They are earned.
