‏Your brain is constantly keeping track of more than just your body. 🧠

‏It also represents the space immediately around you — known as peripersonal space (PPS).

‏Think about reaching for a cup, walking through a doorway, or moving around another person. To interact with the world around us, the brain continuously brings together sensory information — including vision, touch and proprioceptive information — with movement.

‏And pregnancy gives us a fascinating example of how adaptable this system may be.

‏A 2019 study published in Scientific Reports examined peripersonal space during pregnancy using an audio-tactile task.

‏The researchers found that at approximately 34 weeks of pregnancy, the representation of peripersonal space was larger compared with non-pregnant controls. The same difference was not observed earlier in pregnancy or several weeks postpartum.

‏Why is this interesting?

‏As pregnancy progresses, the size and shape of the body change significantly. The researchers proposed that the way the brain represents the space surrounding the body may adapt alongside these physical changes.

‏It’s a fascinating reminder that movement is more than muscles and joints.

‏Our ability to move through the world involves an ongoing relationship between sensory information, the nervous system, muscles, joints and the environment around us.

‏From a chiropractic perspective, an individualized assessment may consider relevant aspects of this neuromusculoskeletal picture — including movement, joint function, muscle function and relevant neurological findings — based on the person’s clinical presentation.

‏Every pregnancy is different.
‏Every body adapts differently. 🤍

‏And understanding how someone is moving and functioning is an important part of individualized care.

Right now, without thinking about it, you’re breathing differently than you did before pregnancy. 🤍

Your brain didn’t ask permission. Your diaphragm shifted position. Your rib cage adapted. Your whole breathing pattern reorganized itself — automatically, invisibly, in the background — while you were busy growing a human.

This is the kind of thing nobody tells you about pregnancy.

Here’s what’s actually happening: as the uterus grows, it elevates the diaphragm and changes how the chest, ribs, and abdominal wall coordinate with every single breath you take.

So where does chiropractic come in?

Breathing is movement — thoracic spine, ribs, muscles, all working together. An individualized assessment looks at how that movement is functioning for you — not to promise better breathing or oxygenation, but to understand your neuromusculoskeletal presentation and figure out the right next step: care, self-management, co-management, or referral.

One thing worth saying clearly: if shortness of breath feels new, severe, or persistent — that’s not something to assume away. Get it checked.

Every pregnancy adapts differently. Yours deserves care that’s just as individual.

Close your eyes.

Now bend your elbow.

Without looking, you still know approximately where your arm is.

How? 🧠

That simple experience introduces proprioception — your sense of body position and movement.

Sensory receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints provide information about position, movement, and force. Your nervous system integrates this information with visual and vestibular input to help coordinate movement, posture, and balance.

During pregnancy, the mechanical demands of movement can change. As pregnancy progresses, body shape, mass distribution, joint loading, and movement demands may evolve.

Your nervous system continues to process sensory information and coordinate movement within this changing mechanical environment.

Importantly, this does not mean that pregnancy automatically causes impaired proprioception, poor balance, or a “dysregulated” nervous system. Every body adapts differently.

So where does chiropractic fit?

Chiropractic assessment can consider relevant aspects of neuromusculoskeletal function based on the individual clinical presentation.

This may include:

Movement • Joint function • Muscle function • Relevant neurological findings

The goal is to understand the individual’s neuromusculoskeletal presentation, identify clinically relevant findings, and determine whether chiropractic care, self-management, co-management, or referral may be appropriate.

As pregnancy progresses, movement demands continue to evolve. Individualized, evidence-informed care begins with understanding how each person is moving and functioning through those changes.

Movement is more than muscle. It’s a sensory–motor conversation. 🧠

Every movement you make depends on a continuous exchange of information between your body and nervous system.

Receptors in your muscles, joints and other tissues provide information about position and movement. Your nervous system processes this proprioceptive input alongside visual and vestibular information, then continuously adjusts motor output to help coordinate movement, posture and balance.

Here’s the pregnancy connection:
As pregnancy progresses, body geometry, mass distribution and mechanical demands change. This means the nervous system is coordinating movement in a body whose movement environment is continually evolving.

Balance isn’t controlled by one muscle, one joint—or even one sensory system. Your brain continuously weighs information from vision + the vestibular system + somatosensory/proprioceptive input. When the demands on the body change, movement strategies can adapt too.

That’s one reason walking, balance, or certain movements may simply feel different during pregnancy.

From a chiropractic perspective, the goal is not to “correct” normal pregnancy adaptations. An individualized neuromusculoskeletal assessment can look at movement, joint function, muscle function and relevant neurological findings to understand how your body is managing those changing demands.

Your muscles create movement.
Your nervous system helps coordinate it.

Pregnancy changes more than your belly — it changes the way your body manages load, movement, and stability. 🤍

Low back and pelvic girdle pain are common during pregnancy, but there usually isn’t one single cause.

As pregnancy progresses, changes in body shape, mechanical loading, muscle demands, and the way the trunk and pelvis adapt can all contribute to how your back feels.

And an important reminder: pain doesn’t automatically mean something is “out of alignment.” Pregnancy-related back pain is often multifactorial, which is why assessment should focus on the individual — their symptoms, movement, function, and clinical findings.

Research suggests low back and pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy is rarely explained by one single cause, and that regular exercise during pregnancy may be associated with lower pain severity, though no single exercise approach works for everyone.

What may help?

🌿 Keep moving within your comfort level
🌿 Change positions throughout the day
🌿 Use appropriate core, hip & pelvic support strategies
🌿 Modify activities that consistently aggravate symptoms
🌿 Use supportive sleep positions

If pain is persistent or worsening — or is accompanied by weakness, bowel/bladder changes, fever, vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, contractions, or follows trauma — appropriate medical assessment is important.

Chiropractic assessment can evaluate neuromusculoskeletal function, movement, joint function, and physical limitations to help guide individualized care.

Pregnancy doesn’t require “perfect posture.”
It deserves informed, individualized support. 🌿

Why Does Walking Feel Different During Pregnancy?

Have you noticed that walking feels a little different as your pregnancy progresses?

You’re not imagining it.

As your body changes, your center of gravity gradually shifts, your joints and muscles work differently, and your nervous system continuously coordinates movement to help you stay stable during everyday activities.

These changes are part of your body’s normal adaptation to pregnancy.

🧠 Every step you take depends on your brain integrating information from your eyes, inner ear, muscles, joints, and feet to coordinate efficient movement.

Because your body’s mechanics are changing, your movement strategies naturally adapt as well.

✨ Moving differently doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.
In many cases, it simply reflects how your body is adapting to pregnancy.

🩺 Why does this matter?

Understanding how your body moves during pregnancy helps us better understand how your body is adapting, not just where you may feel discomfort.

During an individualized prenatal chiropractic assessment, a chiropractor may evaluate posture, walking pattern (gait), balance, joint mobility, and functional movement as part of a neuromusculoskeletal examination. These findings help guide individualized education, movement recommendations, and exercise modifications when appropriate.

Every pregnancy is unique, and movement patterns can vary from one person to another.

🌱 Every body adapts differently.
Factors such as anatomy, previous pregnancies, physical activity, and daily demands all influence how your body responds.

These adaptations are a normal part of pregnancy—not signs that your body is “out of alignment” or “failing.”

Understanding why your body moves differently is the first step toward moving with more confidence throughout pregnancy.

✨ Pregnancy is one of the most remarkable examples of human biomechanics in action.

⚖️ What Is Balance & Coordination?

Balance and coordination begin developing from the very start of life.

Every time your baby reaches for a toy, lifts their head, rolls, crawls, or takes those first steps, their brain and body are learning to work together.

🧠 Did You Know? Balance Begins Before Birth
The vestibular system (the body’s balance sensor in the inner ear) is actually one of the first sensory systems to develop — even before birth.

📍 Around 7 weeks gestation — vestibular hair cells begin forming
📍 Around 32 weeks gestation — the Moro reflex is fully developed, a sign of vestibular-brainstem connection
📍 By the 8th–9th month in utero — the vestibular nerve becomes fully myelinated and functional

By the time your baby is born, their balance system has already been “practicing” for months, responding to your heartbeat, movement, and the rhythm of your steps throughout pregnancy. Birth is just the beginning of putting that system to work in a whole new environment (gravity!).

🧠 Develops naturally
Balance and coordination evolve as babies grow and gain new movement experiences.

🤸 Built through movement
Everyday opportunities to move, explore, and play help babies practice new motor skills and discover the world around them.

🌱 Supports new skills
As balance and coordination develop, they provide a foundation for milestones such as rolling, sitting, crawling, standing, and walking.

👩🏻‍⚕️ Observed during an age-appropriate chiropractic assessment
A chiropractor may observe balance and coordination alongside movement, posture, muscle tone, developmental stage, health history, and your family’s questions or concerns as part of an individualized neuromusculoskeletal assessment.

Every baby develops at their own pace. Development is a journey—not a race—and each child deserves to be understood within their own unique clinical context.

🤍 What Is Posture in Newborns?

Did you know that babies are born with their own natural resting posture?

The way a newborn holds their head, arms, legs, and body is a normal part of early development—and it changes rapidly during the first months of life.

Newborns typically start out with a flexed, curled-in posture—a carryover from their curled position in the womb. Over the first few months, as muscles strengthen and the nervous system matures, this gradually gives way to a more extended, open posture, which supports skills like reaching, rolling, and eventually sitting.

Every baby develops differently, and posture is influenced by many factors, including growth, movement, comfort, and individual development.

During an age-appropriate chiropractic assessment, a chiropractor may observe posture alongside movement, muscle tone, developmental stage, health history, and your family’s questions or concerns. These observations help build a more complete picture of your baby’s neuromusculoskeletal development.

No single observation tells the whole story. Every child deserves an individualized assessment.

💪 What Is Muscle Tone?

Muscle tone is the natural level of tension in our muscles—even when we’re resting. It isn’t the same as muscle strength.

Healthy muscle tone helps support posture, movement, and the development of motor skills as babies grow.

As babies develop, muscle tone naturally changes. What’s expected for a newborn is different from what’s expected for an older infant.

Tone can appear higher (more rigid) or lower (more relaxed) than what’s typical for a baby’s age—though a wide range is considered normal, and tone should always be looked at alongside overall movement and development.

During an age-appropriate chiropractic assessment, a chiropractor may observe muscle tone alongside movement, posture, developmental stage, health history, and your family’s questions or concerns. These observations are considered together to better understand your child’s individual presentation.

Every baby develops differently, and muscle tone is just one part of the bigger picture.
