The Vagus nerve is attracting significant research interest.
A recent clinical trial investigated an implanted Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) device for people with severe treatment-resistant depression. The device was surgically implanted and delivered regular electrical pulses directly to the vagus nerve.
Researchers reported sustained benefits for many participants over a two-year period.
What makes the study interesting for Bowen practitioners is the growing scientific attention being given to this remarkable nerve.
The Vagus nerve is one of the body's major communication pathways, linking the brain with organs throughout the chest and abdomen.
Many Bowen Therapists will be familiar with the Vagus nerve procedure.
Its aim is not to override the body, but to work respectfully with it. Like all Bowen work, it reflects a philosophy of minimal input: subtle, precise, and followed by pause.
As research continues to explore the Vagus nerve and its role within the nervous system, it's fascinating to see mainstream medicine investing so heavily in understanding a structure Bowen Therapists have long recognised as important.

The vagus nerve (also called cranial nerve X) is the longest and most winding nerve in your body. It acts as a two-way information highway connecting your brain to your major organs—including the heart, lungs, and digestive tract. It controls involuntary actions like heart rate, breathing, and digestion (your "rest and digest" system)

Wow, we love this artwork of the vagus nerve! 🤩
This vital nerve is responsible for regulating many bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, and stress responses.
By gently stimulating key points along the body, Bowen Therapy may help to activate the vagus nerve, promoting relaxation, improved digestion, and overall well-being.

Your symptoms are signals — but they’re not the whole picture.
What feels like a local issue (tight calves, sore shoulders, stiff neck) may actually be part of a larger pattern your body has been managing quietly for years.
Bowen Therapy aims to address the deeper systems:
• fascia
• muscle tension
• joint alignment
• nervous system balance
• compensation patterns
Because lasting change can happen when the whole body gets the memo — not just one part.

The body rarely goes from healthy to overwhelmed overnight.
Before pain, illness, or injury, many people notice subtle changes:
• Feeling more tired than usual
• Taking longer to recover
• Increased muscle tension
• Poor sleep quality
• Less resilience to everyday stress
These aren't problems to ignore.
They're information.
Bowen Therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach that works with the body's connective tissues and systems, supporting relaxation, awareness, and overall well-being.

Your nervous system is constantly doing three things:
✨ Receiving input
✨ Processing information
✨ Generating response
Most of this happens automatically, without conscious awareness.
This is why pauses are included between moves — to allow time for observation of change and system response.
It’s less about what is done in a moment, and more about what your system does with it.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can have a real impact on daily life - from discomfort and bloating to ongoing stress and fatigue.
The Bowen Technique offers a gentle, whole-body approach that may help support those living with IBS. By working through the fascia and encouraging relaxation of the nervous system, Bowen aims to help reduce overall tension in the body - something that can play a role in digestive health.
While not a treatment or cure for IBS, Bowen can be a supportive therapy, helping the body find balance

The Jaw Is Rarely Just the Jaw
Most people think jaw tension is simply stress, teeth grinding, or TMJ.
But the jaw is often part of a much bigger story.
One of the things I’ve noticed repeatedly through Bowen Therapy is that people carrying tension in the jaw are rarely only holding it there physically.
The jaw is deeply connected to the nervous system, the neck, the diaphragm, posture, breathing patterns, and even the pelvis through the fascial network of the body.
This is why someone with jaw tension may also experience:
* headaches or migraines
* neck and shoulder tightness
* dizziness
* poor sleep
* anxiety or feeling “wired”
* clenching or grinding teeth
* digestive tension
* shallow breathing
* lower back or pelvic imbalance
The body is always adapting.
And the jaw is one of the places where the nervous system often shows us that someone has been holding tension, pressure, responsibility, or emotion for a very long time.
Sometimes it’s stress.
Sometimes it’s hypervigilance.
Sometimes it’s simply being “on” for too long.
Many people don’t realise they are clenching until their body finally starts speaking louder through pain, tension, headaches, or exhaustion.
What makes Bowen Therapy interesting is that we don’t try to force the jaw to release.
Instead, we work with the nervous system.
Gentle moves over very specific points in the body send information through the fascia and nervous system, allowing the body an opportunity to soften protective patterns and reorganise tension naturally.
Often the jaw relaxes not because we attacked the jaw directly…
but because the body no longer feels it has to hold so tightly.
This is also why Bowen can sometimes create changes in areas that seem unrelated.
The jaw is rarely just the jaw.
It’s part of a much bigger conversation happening throughout the whole body.

Bowen therapy is a gentle, non-invasive, and holistic soft-tissue technique that stimulates the nervous system to promote pain relief, deep relaxation, and self-healing. It effectively treats chronic and acute musculoskeletal pain (back, neck, sciatica), sports injuries, and stress-related conditions by targeting the fascia, muscles, and tendons.
