A smile. A conversation. Five minutes of play. A moment of connection.

The everyday interactions we share with children help shape their developing brains and build the foundation for lifelong wellbeing.

A beautiful reminder from Molly Wright’s TED Talk: How Every Child Can Thrive by Five.

Connection is one of the greatest gifts we can give our children ❤️

🌈 Parent Playbook

Not all children want to talk about what happened — and that’s okay.

Some children process experiences by:
👉 drawing it
👉 crashing it
👉 hiding it
👉 burying it in sand

This isn’t avoidance. It’s a developmentally appropriate way of processing.

Through play, children can approach difficult feelings at their own pace, in a way that feels safer and more manageable.

As a parent or caregiver, your role isn’t to force the story. It’s to provide presence, patience, and a sense of safety.

Play gives children a way to work through what they’re feeling.

💬 Inside the Playroom

“They just crashed cars for 40 minutes…”

Not quite.

What may look like repetitive or chaotic play is often something much deeper. In those moments, the child’s nervous system may be:
➡️ exploring chaos,
➡️ practicing control,
➡️ replaying survival, or
➡️ testing safety

And slowly, through the presence of a safe, attuned therapist, beginning to find regulation.

Play Therapy creates space for children to experience, express, and reorganize intense feelings in a way that feels manageable.

Sometimes healing looks like crashing cars. 🚗
And sometimes that’s exactly what’s needed.

🧠 Neuroscience Nugget

Trauma isn’t just stored in words. It’s stored in the body.
When children experience overwhelming events, those experiences are often encoded in sensory and emotional memory, not just language.

That’s why children may process trauma through:
👉 Movement
👉 Sand play
👉 Water play
👉 Symbolic storytelling

In Play Therapy, these experiences help children release stored stress, regulate their nervous system, and gradually make sense of what happened.

Healing happens when the body feels safe. Not just when the story is told.

At Balance & Thrive Child and Family Therapy, our child-centred play therapy space is thoughtfully designed to help children feel safe, supported, and understood. Through imaginative play, sensory-friendly spaces, and creative exploration, children are encouraged to express emotions, build confidence, strengthen regulation skills, and process experiences in ways that feel natural to them.

Play is a child’s language — and within this space, healing, connection, and growth can begin. ❤️
