As most of you know, much of the work I do revolves around addiction and recovery and recently It’s been a bit of an unsteady spring!!! šŸ¤—

There have been a lot of conversations lately about relapse and what it means. One thing I find myself saying over and over is that relapse is often a part of recovery. Not because we want it to happen, but because sometimes it is necessary.

We seem to have this tendency to view relapse as failure when often it’s information, awareness, and an opportunity for growth.

What I notice most is the feelings of shame, guilt and disappointment. The person struggling feels it. The people who love them feel it. Yet I wonder how much of that disappointment is driven by self judgment, or fear of judgment, and our belief that we should somehow be further ahead than we are but honestly we are only human. We suffer. We make mistakes but more importantly we get up and try again!

Addiction can be real and I often find myself struggling to hold back my own emotions at times. I find myself faced with many stories of struggles daily, and at times I also find myself struggling to stay strong. That is also human! I often face my own disappointment in my ability to help facilitate change, and to help those believe the beauty I see in others.

Anyway, I’ll get back on track….addiction should never be judged, especially by those who have never truly experienced its power and the way it can take hold of a life. It is easy to have opinions about something you’ve never had to fight yourself every day.

One of the bigger conversations this week was around family! Families are often trying their absolute best to help, yet can unknowingly become some of the biggest triggers. Fear, worry, frustration, exhaustion, and love all get tangled together. Part of my role is helping families better understand addiction and recovery while also helping them take care of themselves. Supporting someone you love through addiction is hard, and families need support too.

Between the heavy conversations, there were some pretty good moments this week. Random beach rides, days spent brushing horses. Long conversations by the brook wrapped in blankets…..because the warmer weather still wasn’t quite convinced it should arrive. To be fair, there were some really nice days hidden amongst the dreary ones.

Maybe that’s recovery too.

A mix of hard days and beautiful moments existing side by side.

Here’s to sunnier days, greener pastures, and remembering that progress isn’t always measured by never falling. Sometimes it’s measured through those moments and by getting back up again! šŸ™ā¤ļø

100%…. I have a lot of respect for Dr. Nicole Labor, Addiction Assassin, our approaches to ā€œreconstructionā€ are very similar, and I do believe psycho education is necessary to help clients fully understand some of the more profound and fundamental aspects of addiction. Also….I apologize to those who may feel offended by the language! Have a great day ā˜ŗļø

Yesterday was one of those golden days at Hope Hill.

Laughter echoed through the yard, the sun finally showed off, the birds chirped and sung, and the horses were more than happy to soak up the extra company. It was my first full day back with working with the horses, I had the privilege of some new families and the joy in the air was impossible to miss.

I often say that asking someone to sit in a room and get deeper inside their head can be incredibly hard, especially when many are already desperate to get out of it. Sometimes we just need space, movement, fresh air, and something else real to connect with.

Here at Hope Hill, whether it’s standing in the pasture beside a horse, walking the fields, or breathing in the salt air down at the beach, people get the chance to step outside the noise for a while. That alone can be powerful.

And then there are the horses. They have a curious habit of picking their people. Somehow they know who needs softness, who needs confidence, who needs patience, and who simply needs a quiet friend nearby. Watching those connections happen is always a little bit magic.

I’m often asked why I don’t do more of this every day. Trust me, I would in a heartbeat. But many of the people who could benefit most are also facing the biggest barriers like transportation, finances, distance, and life piling on top of them.

So when days like yesterday happen, they matter.

Today the horses are enjoying a well-earned rest, recharging in the pasture after a day of helping humans carry their load a little lighter.

And the perfect ending came when night arrived. A soft glow stretched across the sky and the stars began to appear, like tiny reminders of the magic that had unfolded here through the day. Sometimes a place holds something special, and sometimes the sky is kind enough to reflect it back.
