Fall registration is now open for Resilient Kids and Resilient Teens.

Resilience isn’t something kids either have or don’t have. It’s something they can build.

Our yoga inspired play therapy programs give children and teens space to move, play, talk, connect and practice the skills that help them navigate real life: confidence, emotional regulation, friendships, boundaries, using their voice and moving through hard things.

Classes are led by a therapist and children’s yoga instructor and combine movement, mindfulness, creative play and meaningful conversation. Each class is built around a different intention, with a crystal chosen to align with that theme for participants to take home.

For ages 4 to 17
Weekly classes on Mondays
Monthly classes on Sundays

RVN Wellness is proud to be a Spike Award recipient for Business Impact, recognizing our contribution to the Port Moody community.

Register by September 1 and save 15% with promo code YOUNGRAVENS.

Program fees may be eligible for coverage through extended health benefits where counselling by an RSW is a benefit.

There is something pretty special about a full circle moment.

Nearly six years ago, when Resilient Kids was brand new, I invited Zoe Royer then a Port Moody City Councillor, to visit our girls camp and talk about women in leadership.

A few weeks ago, Zoë came back, this time as our MP, to visit Resilient Kids and meet some of the young people working with us through Canada Summer Jobs.

The kids were genuinely fascinated by her job and had so many questions about what an MP actually does. It was pretty cool watching that natural curiosity unfold.

A huge thank you to Zoë and Canada Summer Jobs for investing in youth employment and giving young people opportunities to build real skills, take on responsibility and contribute to their communities.

Fittingly, this week's camp theme is leadership.

Yesterday, two boys took the lead getting us to Bloedel Conservatory. At each station, they studied the transit maps, figured out the route and led the group almost the entire way - only needing help identifying the bus stop to get off.

Today at Lynn Canyon, a group of kids started making plans to come back together on their own, figuring out transportation and how they could make it happen.

These might sound like small things. They're not.

Confidence grows when a child realizes, “I can figure this out.” Leadership grows when we give kids enough freedom to actually lead.

Young people are struggling with anxiety, loneliness, emotional regulation and disconnection. Resilient Kids was built around the idea that we don't have to wait until a child is overwhelmed before we start giving them tools.

So we play.

We explore.

We solve problems.

We make friends.

We practice courage, communication, independence, and emotional regulation.

And somewhere in the middle of all that fun, kids start discovering just how capable they are.

Nearly six years ago, that first camp had a handful of kids. This week, we have two sold out camps running.

And yes, it's cheesy, but I mean it: our Resilient Kids are our future leaders.

Maybe one day one of the kids asking Zoë questions about being an MP will be the one standing there answering them 🫶

Okay… plot twist.

After several days of phone calls and emails, we finally heard back from bylaw today.

And the explanation was… not quite the same one we were given on Sunday.

On Sunday, we were told by City of Port Moody bylaw that rescue puppy yoga might not be covered by our business licence and that we could be fined. In fact, the officer was adamant that we would be fined and repeatedly stated a fine would be in the mail.

Today, we were told the concern actually started because the Car Free Day event coordinator was apparently unsure whether we had paid our participation fee.

We had.

Then the conversation shifted to insurance.

We have that too.

So yes, we still have some questions about how a concern about an event fee somehow turned into multiple uniformed officers arriving at our studio, questioning our business licence and repeatedly threatening to fine us.

And then, because apparently this story needed another plot twist, I also heard from the law firm assisting the City with my Freedom of Information request.

Why is the city paying a lawyer to do a simple FOI request?

Interesting.

We are following up because the whole sequence of events still feels… strange.

BUT.

Here is the happy ending:

BYLAW CONFIRMED THAT RESCUE PUPPY YOGA CAN CONTINUE.

So the puppies stay.

We get to keep opening our studio to local rescues, helping adoptable dogs meet potential families, raising money for rescue organizations and creating some ridiculously joyful yoga classes along the way.

We’ll keep asking questions behind the scenes about what happened on Sunday, and I’ll keep pursuing the records so I can better understand how and why this happened.

But for now, we’re celebrating, because RESCUE PUPPY YOGA LIVES ON!

OMG. The Inner Child Retreat is only ONE MONTH AWAY!

I have hardly posted about it because it has been quietly filling up all on its own, which feels like the greatest testament to just how special and ridiculously fun this weekend is.

But for those who still have not heard much about it, here are a few clips from last year.

So. Much. Laughter.

I am lucky. I get to play all day, every day, at kids camp. Old Maid got completely out of control at Belcarra Park today. But most adults spend far more time adulting than playing and so I created these retreats to share that joy with you 🫶

Our Inner Child Retreat is an opportunity to step away from all of that adulting. To reset, recharge and reconnect through play, rest and meaningful connection.

Play is not just for children. It reduces stress, encourages creativity, strengthens relationships and helps us feel more present and alive. It gives our nervous systems a break from constantly managing, producing and holding everything together.

This retreat is for everybody.

You do not need to be good at yoga. You do not need to be outgoing. You do not need to arrive with friends. You do not need to be healed, spiritual or comfortable being silly.

You just need to come as you are.

Throughout the weekend, we create opportunities for you to feel seen, heard, welcomed and genuinely included. You can join in fully, take quiet time when you need it, laugh until your stomach hurts, make meaningful connections and remember parts of yourself that may have been buried underneath years of responsibility.

The weekend includes yoga with Dawn, breathwork with Beam and Chelsey, sound healing with Surya, nourishing plant based meals (yes, Bear is back this year in the kitchen!) a dream catcher workshop with Choni, time in nature, creative activities, games, connection and plenty of space to simply be.

September 17 to 20 in beautiful Roberts Creek.

The retreat is already filling, so if you have been thinking about joining us, now is the time.

Come play with us.

Register now.

Take advantage of our car free deals either to unlock member prices for the retreat (memberships are 50% off right now!) or the $50 off promo code!

Thank you to Barks, Brews & Beyond for collaborating on today's event, and for everyone who came out today to cuddle rescue puppies, support adoption and raise money for Snow Dog Society

We are especially excited for the Dogs who found new homes in our community!

But despite the successful event, this may be our final rescue puppy event.

Port Moody Bylaw attended our studio today during our rescue puppy meet and greet to talk to me about puppy yoga.

I was told I could potentially be fined because our business licence is for yoga and counselling.

Except here is the bizarre part:

They were not actually sure we had violated a bylaw.

The event was not shut down. No safety concern was raised. There was no issue with the puppies or the rescue.

Instead, I was told they would look into it and if they can find a bylaw we violated, the fine will be in the mail. They told me that my business license is for yoga, but not include puppy yoga.

Yes. Port Moody bylaw visited my business today to inform me to expect a fine for offering puppy yoga under my yoga business license. Yes. That happened today.

Port Moody bylaw enforcement is complaint based, which means someone was concerned enough about our rescue puppy fundraisers to make a complaint in the first place.

Yes. Someone complained to bylaw about our puppy yoga classes.

RVN makes $0 from these events. We donate the studio, our instructors volunteer and 100% of the proceeds go directly to rescue.

We are not a kennel.
We are not a dog daycare.
We are not boarding animals.
We are not selling puppies.

We are a yoga studio that occasionally does yoga with rescue puppies to raise much needed funds for the rescues.

I have asked the City to identify exactly what bylaw we supposedly violated.

Because if you are going to fine someone for breaking a bylaw, shouldn't you know which bylaw they broke first?

And yes, all puppies were vaccinated.

So… was today our last rescue puppy yoga event?

I hope not. Let the City of Port Moody know how you feel about City bylaw resources being spent to try to shut down puppy yoga.

Car Free Day is all about celebrating the people and local organizations that make our community so special, and we are so excited to open up the RVN studio for something very close to our hearts.

This Sunday, join us for an adoption event and donation drive supporting Snow Dog Society alongside our friends at Barks, Brews, and Beyond.

Stop by between 12 and 3pm, bring a cash donation or items from Snow Dogs wish list, cuddle some ridiculously adorable adoptable puppies, and maybe even meet your new best friend.

There is no set admission fee. We are simply asking our community to show up, bring what they can, and help support a local rescue doing incredible work.

Local rescue. Local volunteers. Local love. Port Moody strong.

Come for Car Free Day. Stay for the puppies.

I have the wildest job in the world.

For 6.5 hours a day, I chase kids around the Lower Mainland on buses, SkyTrains, through forests, museums, libraries, beaches, gardens and places we sometimes did not even know we were going to when the day started.

And I absolutely love it.

Our Adventure Camps are not really about the destinations. The destinations are pretty awesome, but they are almost beside the point.

They are about the kid who was terrified to order their own ice cream and eventually does it.

The kid who starts the week on the outside of the group and ends it feeling like they belong.

The kids who argue, get frustrated, miss a bus, get rained on, have to compromise, change the plan, figure something out together and discover that they can handle far more than they thought they could.

They are about reading peacefully in a library and having to decide whether we even want to leave.

They are about sitting at a bus stop playing a game because we have 15 minutes to kill.

They are about adults and teenagers genuinely wanting to hang out with kids, talk to them, play with them and know them.

There are hard moments. Sometimes there are really hard days. But that is part of it too. We are not trying to remove every uncomfortable experience from childhood. We are creating a safe place for kids to move through those experiences and discover what they are capable of.

I am so ridiculously proud of what our Resilient Kids programs have become.

We have ONE spot left in next week’s Young Leaders Adventure Camp, and our fall Resilient Kids programs are now open for registration.

If your kid needs more confidence, independence, connection, adventure, play, or simply a place where they can completely be themselves, I would love to have them with us.

Come wobble with us.

SUP Yoga is every Wednesday at 6 pm at Sasamat Lake, and you definitely do not need to be good at yoga or good on a paddleboard to come.

Expect some yoga, some laughs, probably a few splashes, and a really beautiful time out on the water.

No prior experience required.
