We’ve expanded and it’s beautiful!

Over 10 years of providing exemplary care to the residents of Scugog and beyond, we grew to ensure our patients’ needs could be met. That growth needed more workspace and offices to do our important work.

After a year of planning and a month of preparation, with only minor interruptions over the course of 2 days, space is finished and we couldn’t be more proud.

We’re seeing more and more patients who have received a “travel health assessment” from various other providers. Some online, some local, some out of town. I can’t stress enough, all travel health professionals should have their Certificate in Travel Health from the International Society of Travel Medicine. This certification is the gold standard for Travel Health professionals and requires extensive study, examination and recertification every 10 years as well as continuing education to maintain your credentials.

I have been practicing travel health and held my CTH designation for over 11 years and seen hundreds of patients traveling to just about every destination.

My recommendation? Wherever you get your travel health services from, check that your provider has their CTH designation to help ensure you are getting the best care possible.

Cross-tapering is one of the most common strategies used when switching antidepressants.

During a cross-taper, the dose of your current medication is gradually lowered while a new medication is slowly introduced. This approach can help reduce the risk of discontinuation symptoms and support a smoother transition.

The timeline varies from person to person and depends on the medications involved. If you're switching antidepressants, speak with your pharmacist about what to expect during the process.

Some pharmacies and online providers only provide an assessment and are unable to prescribe travel medications. They rely on other providers to prescribe and/or administer travel vaccines, which can result in delays and/or increased costs. Always deal with a provider that is ISTM certified, and can prescribe and adminster ALL travel health vaccines.

At Travel Health Associates of Port Perry, we can assess, prescribe, and administer the proper prescriptions for your travel in one visit.

Your travel health professional should have their Certificate in Travel Health from ISTM to ensure they have received the gold-standard in training to provide Travel Health assessments and advice.

Have you been told recently that “in order to receive this drug, you must use a specific pharmacy”?

Most often it involves what are referred to as “specialty drugs”. You should know that the only thing “special” about them is their higher cost. Most pharmacies, including Pharmacy Associates of Port Perry, are qualified, equipped and prepared to handle these and all other medications. Anyone telling you otherwise is trying to sell you something. 😉

More and more insurance companies are encouraging, or in some cases, forcing patients to use corporate or “mail order” pharmacies to fill some or all of your prescriptions. Not only are these companies taking away the patient’s right to choose a provider, they fragment care (different medications filled at different pharmacies) and potentially reduce access by compelling you to use a pharmacy that may require significant travel to attend.

Additionally, insurance companies are starting to “vertically integrate”, opening pharmacies themselves, creating a potential conflict of interest.

None of this is in the patient’s interest and can potentially complicate care when providers don’t know who’s taking what.

You have the right to choose your pharmacy provider.

We feel strongly that patient autonomy is paramount.
