"Lost Connections" by journalist Johann Hari examines why depression and anxiety rates have risen so dramatically β€” and challenges simplistic explanations in favour of a more complex, research-grounded look at the social and environmental factors at play.

It is not a clinical text, but it draws on substantive research and interviews with leading scientists and psychologists. For someone seeking to understand the broader context of depression beyond medication or individual coping, it offers a thought-provoking perspective worth engaging with critically.

The term "evidence-based" is used frequently in mental health β€” but what does it actually mean? 🎯

In psychological treatment, evidence-based refers to approaches that have been studied through rigorous scientific research, demonstrated to produce measurable outcomes, and replicated across multiple studies and populations. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy are examples of approaches with strong evidence bases for specific conditions.

Choosing a Registered Doctoral Psychologist means choosing a professional who is trained in and accountable to these standards. Share this with someone who wants to understand the difference.

When anxiety spikes, your nervous system needs an anchor, and grounding techniques are one of the most well-researched tools for doing exactly that. πŸ’‘

The 5-4-3-2-1 technique works by directing your attention to your immediate sensory environment, interrupting the anxiety cycle before it escalates.

Name 5 things you see, 4 you can touch, 3 you hear, 2 you smell, 1 you taste, in that order. This is not a cure for anxiety, but it is a concrete, evidence-informed strategy that many people find genuinely useful in the moment.

Seeking psychological support requires self-awareness, honesty, and a willingness to engage with difficult experiences β€” none of which are qualities associated with weakness. πŸ’‘

The persistence of this myth actively prevents people from accessing care that would benefit them, often at significant cost to their functioning, relationships, and quality of life.

Psychological support is sought by individuals across the full spectrum of experience β€” professionals, parents, students, athletes, caregivers β€” many of whom are highly capable people navigating genuinely hard circumstances.

Recognizing that support would help is a sign of clarity, not weakness.

The Stigma-Free Mental Health Society is doing important work β€” and their resources are worth bookmarking. Their platform offers mental health education, anti-stigma campaigns, and tools designed to help communities talk more openly and accurately about psychological health.

For anyone in Saskatchewan navigating mental health challenges β€” or supporting someone who is β€” reducing stigma starts with access to credible information. This is one of the organizations we point people toward.

Grief is often described as something that follows a death β€” but the experience of loss extends well beyond bereavement. πŸ’‘

Grief can follow the end of a relationship, the loss of a role, a change in health, a shattered sense of safety, or a future that will not unfold as imagined. These losses are real, and the grief that follows them is clinically meaningful.

Research on grief has moved well beyond stage-based models. We now understand that grief is non-linear, highly individual, and can intersect significantly with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Prolonged grief β€” marked by persistent longing and difficulty adapting to life after loss β€” is a recognized psychological condition with evidence-based treatment approaches.

One of the most common questions we hear, from family members, partners, and caregivers, is how to support someone who is struggling but refuses to seek professional help.

Research on this topic offers a few consistent findings: expressing concern without ultimatums, avoiding unsolicited advice, maintaining your own wellbeing, and staying connected without making mental health the entire focus of every interaction.

It is also important to understand that you cannot force someone into readiness but you can remain a stable, non-judgmental presence that makes it easier for them to take a step when they are ready.

ADHD is often thought of as a childhood condition, but for many people, it persists into adulthood and continues to affect work, relationships, and daily functioning in significant ways.

Adult ADHD frequently looks different than the hyperactive presentation many people associate with the diagnosis. It may appear as chronic disorganization, difficulty sustaining attention on less stimulating tasks, time blindness, impulsivity in decision-making, or a persistent sense of underachievement despite genuine effort.

A formal psychological assessment is the appropriate pathway to understanding whether ADHD is present and what that means for treatment.

Slow, diaphragmatic breathing is one of the few evidence-based tools that directly activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body's built-in stress recovery mechanism. πŸ’‘

When we are stressed or anxious, breathing tends to become shallow and chest-based, which signals the nervous system to remain in a state of alert.

Deliberately slowing and deepening the breath, inhaling for 4 counts, holding for 2, exhaling for 6, sends a counter-signal that supports physiological calm.

This is not a relaxation exercise; it is a regulated, researched intervention with measurable effects on heart rate and cortisol.
