"I recently became a caregiver for my elderly mother and I'm struggling to adjust. My life has changed so much that I feel like I've lost a part of myself. How do I find meaning and balance again?"

Our Response:

Many caregivers experience these feelings, even if they don't talk about them.

Many caregivers experience changes to their identity, relationships, routines, and sense of self.

It's common to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or disconnected from the things that once brought you joy.

A few gentle reminders:

Make time for yourself, even if it's only 10–20 minutes.
Reach out for help you need it.
Explore supports in your community.
Connect with people who understand the caregiving journey.

Finding your new rhythm takes time. Be patient with yourself.

One small idea that can make a gentle difference…

For families supporting someone living with dementia, the same questions can come up again and again.

“Did I pay for everything?”
“Is everyone okay?”
“What’s happening today?”

And each time, you answer with care.

But sometimes… it can help to leave those answers where they can be seen.

A little whiteboard.
A handwritten note.
Something simple and easy to read.

Messages like:

• Your meals are paid for ❤️
• You’re okay
• Everyone is fine
• You are not moving
• You don’t owe anyone money
• You haven’t upset anyone
• Lunch will be at 12:00

It’s not about getting it perfect.

Just offering a bit of reassurance… in a way that’s always there, even when the moment feels uncertain.

Sometimes the smallest things can bring the most comfort.

At Prince George Hospice, we’re here for those moments — the quiet ones, the repeated ones, and everything in between.

Sometimes, when visiting a military grave, you may notice a coin resting quietly on the headstone.

It’s a small gesture, but it carries a quiet message.

The tradition is most widely known in the United States, where different coins came to represent different connections to the person who served. A penny might mean someone stopped to pay their respects. A dime or nickel might suggest they served or trained together. A quarter sometimes meant the visitor had been there at the end.

In Canada, the meaning is a little simpler.

Here, a coin left on a grave is most often just a quiet way of saying: someone was here, someone remembered.

Much like the poppies we wear each November, it’s a small symbol of respect for the life, service, and sacrifice of another person.

Acts of remembrance don’t have to be grand. Sometimes they are as simple as standing for a moment, sharing a memory, saying a quiet thank you… or leaving a small coin behind so the next visitor knows that person is not forgotten.

Huge shout out and heartfelt thank you to Cliff Mannfor his fantastic watercolour of Drac — our beloved hospice cat. 🐾🎨

Why a hospice cat? Because Drac represents so much more than a cat. He brings comfort, quiet companionship, smiles, and moments of connection during difficult times. Sometimes it’s the smallest gestures — a purr, a visit, simply being present — that make the biggest difference.

Thank you, Cliff, for capturing Drac’s spirit so beautifully and helping celebrate the special role he plays in our hospice community. ❤️
