Labradorite has been said to be first discovered in Labrador, Canada, by Moravian missionaries in 1770 who named it for the area. It is, however, referenced in legends by older Inuit tribes, and was known to be in use by the Red Paint People of Maine for over a thousand years. It became a popular gem in Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
According to Inuit legends, Labrador Coast was once filled with trapped Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. The legend says an ancient warrior speared the coast to create Labradorite.

Amazonite was said to be named after the Amazon river it was first discovered at. However mineralogists now claim there are no Amazonite deposits in Amazon river area of Brazil and it was infact nephrite Jade they find there. So that theory is now thrown out the window.
