Gordon was born on the family farm to Gerry and Ethel Gwillim. When Gordon was six years old the family moved to Northern BC where the family lived in a “very small apartment” while his father had a winter job building roads. At 16 years old he obtained his Amateur Radio Licence. He was an avid “Ham” all his life. Following his graduation Gordon pursued further training in Moose Jaw and Ottawa before returning to the north for nearly 3 years. He fondly remembered his time in the north – meeting new friends, the lack of telephone, TV or liquor outlets.
During his time in Ottawa, Gordon obtained his private pilot’s licence. While in the north he purchased his pride and joy, a 1946 J3 Piper manufactured in Ontario. A hanger was designed and built in the farmyard to house and protect his plane for the next 63 years. He loved to reminisce about how he re-covered the frame at the Regina Flying Club in the early 60’s, and about the airplane trips around Saskatchewan with local pilots.
Gordon returned to the farm in 1963 purchasing the Hank Erhardt farm on the outskirts of Duval. During the winters he attended the School of Agriculture where he met lifelong friends with a shared passion for the land.
Gordon was a lifelong learner in agriculture, amateur radio, computers and monitoring our prairie weather. He was an active amateur radio operator, participating in his last Saskatchewan Amateur Radio net 29 December 2025. He strived to be current in farming practices. He submitted daily weather reports to CoCoRaSH, and diligently measured precipitation in all seasons. He was a lover of animals and enjoyed the many additions to the farm collection over the years including chickens, ducks, horses, sheep, and cats.
His greatest pride were his children and grandchildren. He supported their activities, and attended as many as possible. He was always ready to assist with educational project building. His diverse knowledge of many topics was invaluable.
Gordon’s memory will be treasured by friends and family. He is survived by his wife Peggy, children Karen, Heather and Rob. Son-in-law Tony, Daughter-in-law Lana, grandchildren Reese, Isaac, Lukas, Nik, Liam and Amelia. Sister Glenda; Sisters-in-law Barbara; Jill Werle and brother-in-law John, nephews Kevin, Wayne, Joel, and Jordan, nieces Amber and Noelle, great nieces and nephews plus extended family. He is pre-deceased by his parents Ethel and Gerry; in-laws Marian and Keith; brother, Barrie and sister, Penny.
