cityofreddeer Forest tent caterpillars are more noticeable than usual this year. These native insects go through natural outbreak cycles, and you may see them on trees, sidewalks, trails and in natural areas through May and June.
Tree damage can look concerning, but healthy trees often recover. The City is monitoring activity and crews will remove or squish caterpillars where practical during regular work.
You can help by squishing caterpillars or scraping clusters from tree trunks and branches on your property.
Scraping is most effective when caterpillars are grouped together at night or during cooler weather.
You do not need to report general sightings. Please contact The City if caterpillars are creating a safety concern on public sidewalks, trails or roads, or if a high-use public area is heavily affected.
