We don’t start with a checklist.
We start with your child.
A comprehensive autism assessment doesn’t necessarily mean doing every test available.
It means knowing what to assess, when to assess it, and why.
For example, before completing cognitive testing, an important question might be:
Could this child’s language abilities affect how they understand the questions or demonstrate what they know?
Having an SLP as part of the assessment team helps us consider how language and communication may be influencing a child’s performance and whether language needs to be explored further before moving forward.
That information can help our interdisciplinary team make thoughtful decisions about which assessments will provide meaningful information about this child.
Not testing simply because a test is available.
Not moving through the same checklist for every child.
The goal isn’t more testing.
It’s better understanding.
Because the right autism assessment isn’t about using every tool.
It’s about knowing which tool will actually answer the question.

“What if my child has a really good day during their assessment?”
We hear this concern from parents more often than you might think.
Maybe your child slept well. They’re comfortable in the room. They connect with the clinician. They manage transitions beautifully. And suddenly you’re thinking...
“They’re not seeing what we see at home.”
Here’s the important part:
An autism assessment is not based on one moment, one observation, or one “good” or “hard” day.
We’re not waiting for your child to show us certain behaviours so we can check them off a list.
Instead, we put together a much bigger picture. We consider developmental history, parent observations, information from school or daycare when needed, standardized assessment, communication and language, questionnaires, clinical observations, and how all of those pieces fit together.
Different environments can bring out different strengths and different challenges.
So if your child has a great day during their assessment? That’s okay!
We aren’t assessing one day. We’re working to understand your child.

Did you know that speech therapy doesn’t always look like speech therapy?
Sometimes it looks like blowing bubbles. Sometimes it’s building a tower, racing toy cars, singing a favourite song, or simply sitting on the floor together. But behind those moments, there is often so much more happening.
🫧 A pause during bubbles creates an opportunity to request more.
🧱 Building a tower introduces new vocabulary, concepts, and opportunities for interaction.
🚗 Playing with cars creates opportunities to model language, take turns, and share experiences.
🎵 Singing familiar songs encourages anticipation, participation, and communication.
At Speech & Language Builders, we recognize that meaningful learning doesn’t always happen sitting at a table completing structured activities. Play isn’t a break from therapy. Sometimes, play IS the therapy. And while it may look simple, there’s clinical knowledge, intention, and individualized goals behind the experience. Because the best therapy isn’t always the kind that looks like work. 💚

🎃 A little Halloween update from SLB! 🎃
For the past two years, we’ve loved welcoming families to our Sensory Halloween Trick or Treat event and had hoped to make it an annual SLB tradition.
With Halloween falling on a weekend this year, we’ve decided to take a break from hosting the event for 2026.
We know some families have been watching for details, so we wanted to make sure we shared the update.
We’ve absolutely loved seeing our clinic filled with little trick or treaters over the past two years, and we hope to bring our Sensory Halloween event back again in the future! 🎃👻

✂️ A Different Approach to Haircuts
We wanted to give a little shoutout to Sensory Cuts by Paige, an independent service that operates out of space within Speech & Language Builders.
For some individuals, the sounds, sensations, environment, and expectations of a traditional salon can make haircuts stressful or overwhelming.
Sensory Cuts isn’t simply about finding another way to complete the haircut. The focus is on creating a safe, supportive, and comfortable experience where individuals can gradually build comfort and confidence with the different parts of a haircut.
Success might be completing a haircut, but it might also be sitting in the chair, tolerating a cape, hearing the clippers, or simply taking one more step toward something that previously felt too difficult. Haircuts are never forced, and each person is supported at their own pace.
The ultimate goal isn’t to make someone dependent on a specialized haircut environment. It’s to help build the comfort and confidence that may eventually make haircuts in a regular salon setting easier and more successful.
We are happy to have Paige using space within our clinic to offer this unique service in our community. ❤️

Neuro-affirming does NOT mean “we just let kids do whatever they want.”

At Speech & Language Builders, we believe respecting who a child is and helping them build new skills can exist together.

Child-centered, neuro-affirming care means respecting a child’s strengths, needs, communication style, autonomy, and sensory differences while helping them develop meaningful skills for communication, independence, and participation.

It doesn’t mean avoiding anything difficult or never asking a child to step outside their comfort zone.

Our goal is to build the skills and confidence children need to navigate challenges while respecting who they are.

We do it with the child, not to the child. 💙

No Waitlist for Autism Assessments
When you’re looking for answers, the last thing you want is to spend months on a waitlist. At Speech & Language Builders, we work hard to ensure families don’t have to wait. We intentionally manage our assessment services so children can access timely, evidence-based autism assessment when they need them most.
Our comprehensive assessments are completed by an interdisciplinary team, bringing together the expertise of both a Doctoral Psychologist and a Speech Language Pathologist. This collaborative approach provides a thorough understanding of your child’s strengths and needs while ensuring communication and language are carefully considered throughout the assessment process.
Because our assessments are completed by both professionals, families may be able to submit portions of the assessment under both their psychological and speech language pathology insurance benefits, depending on their individual coverage.
