CAAN Communities, Alliances & Networks

CAAN Communities, Alliances & Networks CAAN provides a national forum for First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples to holistically address HIV

About Us

Since 1997, the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network now CAAN Communities, Alliances & Networks has been a leading voice for First Nations, Inuit and Métis (Indigenous) Peoples living with HIV and AIDS, Hepatitis C (HCV) and other sexually transmitted infections (collectively referred to as STBBI) from coast-to-coast-to coast. Our research, programs and policy work is grounded in Indigenous

Ways of Knowing and Doing (IWKD), guided by the voices of Indigenous Peoples living with HIV (IPHAs) and conducted through community and strengths-based lenses. In this way, we provide accurate, up-to-date and culturally responsive resources to support Indigenous leadership, organizations and communities on this land now called Canada, and around the world. Our head office is in Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, on Treaty 4 Territory and the traditional homelands of the Métis nation. Our Eastern office is on the Millbrook First Nation, in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. CAAN staff are based across the land—from the Atlantic to the Pacific coasts. We are guided by the concept Miyo-Pimatisiwin, a Nehiyaw (Cree) word that loosely translates to ‘living the good life.’ Miyo-Pimatisiwin resonates deeply with many Indigenous Peoples across Canada, as it describes the importance of relationships, cultural identity, and connection to the land. Miyo-pimatisiwin is how we ground this work to serve our communities and kin.

New from The Canoe Project.

Darren works at the Lloyd Johnson Memorial Centre with traditional medicines, youth, men’s groups, and community helpers. He speaks about doing the work after treatment, staying close to Elders, and living the teachings every day.

International Overdose Awareness Day
At CAAN, we prefer the term drug poisoning, as many people are dying from a toxic, unregulated supply.
In 2025, Canada recorded 5,630 apparent opioid toxicity deaths, about 15 lives lost every day. More than 56,600 people have died from apparent opioid toxicity since 2016. First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities continue to carry a disproportionate share of this loss.
National data: https://health-infobase.canada.ca/substance-related-harms/opioids-stimulants/
Please carry Naloxone, learn the signs, and call 9-1-1.
CAAN’s Canoe Project has culturally grounded harm reduction resources for Indigenous communities: https://www.caan.ca/the-canoe-project/
We remember those we have lost. Culture is harm reduction.

The Canoe: Reclaiming Power and Place, Regardless of Residency, MMIWG2S+ Urban Indigenous Action Group

Join us for an empowering webinar with MMIWG2S+ Urban Indigenous Action Group. Conversation will be guided by Knowledge Keeper Sedalia Fazio, where we will explore the concept of Reclaiming Power and Place, Regardless of Residency.
The MMIWG2S+ Urban Indigenous Action Group brings together First Nations, Inuit and Métis Survivors, family members, frontline service providers and experts with lived experience of violence and urban Indigenous realities. UIAG members developed the Urban Chapter of the National Action Plan to End Violence Against Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People. The group continues to advance its implementation by advocating for the rights, safety and priorities of urban Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, regardless of residency. Central to this work is ensuring that Survivors, families and Indigenous-led urban organizations are meaningfully included in decision-making, adequately resourced and recognized as essential partners in developing community-led solutions. All are welcome. This gathering will be held with respect, care, and community intention.
