Some myths about ADHD that you may have heard!

Myth: ADHD only affects children.

Reality: While symptoms often manifest in childhood, ADHD can persist into adulthood. Adults may face challenges in areas like work, relationships, and daily tasks. Recognizing and addressing ADHD in adults is crucial for effective management.

Myth: Only boys have ADHD.

Reality: While ADHD is often diagnosed more frequently in boys, it affects both genders. Girls may exhibit different symptoms, such as internalizing difficulties, perfectionism, rigidity in play which often leads to underdiagnosis. Recognizing these gender-specific presentations is essential for accurate identification.

Myth: Medication is the only effective treatment.

Reality: While medication can be beneficial for many individuals, a comprehensive approach is crucial. Behavioral interventions, psychoeducation, therapy, and lifestyle modifications, including organization strategies, can significantly improve daily functioning and quality of life.

Welcome to Self-Care Saturday.

Each Saturday, we’ll be sharing a small reminder, reflection, or practical tool to support your mental health. Self-care is often talked about as something extra, but caring for yourself is an important part of maintaining your wellbeing.

This week’s question is simple: What do you need today?

Take a look at the tear-away tabs and choose the one that speaks to you. Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do is pause long enough to notice what we need instead of pushing through.

If this were a real poster, which tab would you

Grief is one of the most misunderstood human experiences. Many people expect it to follow a predictable path, but the reality is often much more complex.

Grief does not follow a timeline. There is no “right” amount of time to grieve, and healing rarely happens in a straight line.

Grief can resurface years later. Anniversaries, milestones, smells, songs, and unexpected reminders can bring emotions back to the surface when you least expect them.

Having a good day does not mean you’re over it. Moments of joy, laughter, or peace can exist alongside grief.

Grief affects more than emotions. It can impact sleep, concentration, energy levels, appetite, and physical health.

Everyone grieves differently. Some people need to talk, while others process quietly. There is no single correct way to mourn a loss.

Milestones can be especially difficult. Birthdays, holidays, due dates, anniversaries, and other meaningful dates often carry extra weight.

Love and grief often exist together. Grief is not something that needs to be left behind. It can become part of how we continue to carry our love, memories, and connection with those we have lost.

If your grief looks different from what you expected, that does not mean you’re doing it wrong. It means you’re human.

Your emotions are not a judgment about who you are, they are information about what you are experiencing and what might need your attention.

They can point to what feels important, what feels overwhelming, or what feels out of alignment, without meaning anything about your worth or character.

We should look at all emotions through a neutral lens. It is our actions that truly show the kind of person we are.

Get • It can be hard to know where to start when you are looking for mental health support.

People often hear words like therapist, psychiatrist, counselling, CBT, assessment, diagnosis and medication, and it can quickly feel more confusing than it needs to.

A psychiatrist and a therapist can both support mental health, but they help in different ways.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can assess mental health symptoms, consider diagnosis where appropriate, talk through treatment options, and advise on medication if that needs to be explored.

A therapist offers talking therapy support. This might involve working through thoughts, feelings, experiences, patterns, anxiety, low mood, trauma, relationships, coping strategies or day-to-day emotional wellbeing.

There is no “better” route. The right starting point depends on what has been happening and what kind of support may be useful.

At The Therapy Company, we offer private psychiatry, private psychiatric assessments and therapy support for adults, children and young people from our Preston clinic, with online appointments also available where appropriate.

And if you are unsure which route fits, that is okay too. A first enquiry can simply be a way to ask what support may be suitable.

Save this post if you are trying to understand the difference, or share it with someone who may be looking into mental health support.

Get • Is it the baby blues, PPD, or PPA? 💭

Maternal mental health doesn’t look just one way, and symptoms can show up anytime during pregnancy or postpartum.

What you’re feeling might be:
• Baby Blues
• Depression
• Anxiety
✳️ Perinatal Mental Health Disorders also include OCD, bipolar mood disorders, PTSD, and psychosis. ✳️

The Baby Blues are short-term dips in mood caused by the changes of having a baby, and typically dissipate on their own. Depression and anxiety are common, temporary, and treatable, but they do require support.

Too often, parents experience symptoms like: irritability, racing thoughts, guilt, sadness, intrusive thoughts, or constant worry… and don’t realize there’s a name for it.

When we connect the dots, we make maternal mental health visible.
And when it’s visible, it becomes treatable, supportable, and understood.

💙 If you see yourself in this, you are not alone
💙 If you recognize this in someone else, check in
