They weren't even that loud. You know that deep down. And some part of you registered it even in the moment that objectively, this wasn't screaming. But your body didn't get that message. Your chest closed and your throat tightened. Then something in you went completely offline.

And now you're sitting across from someone who is confused about why you look the way you do and you can't fully explain it either.

This is one of the most disorienting experiences that comes with a nervous system shaped by early threat. And it's one of the most misunderstood by the people experiencing it, and by the people on the other side of it.

The nervous system, specifically the polyvagal system, which constantly reads environmental cues for safety and danger, processes vocal tone faster than the conscious mind can follow.

Before you've registered a single word someone said, your body has already analyzed their pitch, their rhythm, the energy behind the voice, and compared it against its stored library of what has historically been safe and what hasn't.

What makes this particularly painful is that it can damage relationships with people who are genuinely safe. A partner who raises their voice slightly because they're passionate about something. A friend who gets animated when they're stressed. A colleague who speaks loudly.

➕ Follow for weekly content on nervous system healing, trauma responses, and the patterns that shape everything.

One of the biggest surprises about setting boundaries is realizing who actually needs an explanation.

The people who care about you may ask questions because they want to understand, but they don’t make you earn your right to have limits. The resistance usually comes from the people who were comfortable with things staying exactly as they were. Their discomfort doesn’t mean your boundary is wrong. Sometimes it’s simply evidence that it was necessary.

Privilege is when you think something is not a problem because it's not a problem to you personally.
