Happy Simcoe Day from Hill House Hospice!

Whether you're enjoying summer festivals, picnics, camping, cottaging, or some quiet time at home, everyone at Hill House Hospice wishes you a wonderful long weekend!

Celebrated on the first Monday of August, the Civic Holiday has been observed in Canada since 1869. While the holiday is known by different names across the country, here in Toronto it is recognized as "Simcoe Day", honouring John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada and the founder of York (now Toronto).

We hope you enjoy a safe, relaxing, and memorable long weekend with family and friends.

Celebrating Holistic Therapy Day! 💜

At Hill House Hospice, care extends beyond physical needs. Holistic therapies help nurture the mind, body, and spirit, bringing comfort, relaxation, and meaningful moments of connection for our residents and their families.

Our certified holistic therapist, Linda Prussick, provides aromatherapy, reflexology, Reiki, therapeutic touch, and recorded music to our residents and their families with the goal of easing stress, reducing anxiety and supporting well-being. Linda combines or modifies modalities in order to tailor care to the needs of each individual. "Attentiveness, flexibility, and adaptability are good companions to compassion."

Today, we celebrate the important role holistic therapy plays in hospice care and thank Linda for the compassionate care and comfort she brings to our residents and their families every day. 💜

We’re often asked about admission to Hill House Hospice.

If you or someone you care about is wondering how the process works, we hope the information below helps answer some of your questions.

Who is eligible for admission?

Prospective residents of Hill House Hospice must:
• Be diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.
• Have an understanding that resuscitation and other life-prolonging interventions will not be provided at Hill House.

The resident and/or their Substitute Decision-Maker (SDM) or Power of Attorney (POA) must understand that there will be no further diagnostic testing, monitoring or curative treatment other than those required for pain and symptom management, and comfort-focused care.

How do I begin the referral process?

Referrals are accepted from a variety of sources. Whether you are an attending physician, hospital, health care professional, community hospice organization, long-term care home, family member or an individual living with a life-limiting illness, you can initiate a referral to Hill House Hospice.

The best place to start is by calling Hill House at 905-737-9308 and speaking with our Intake Coordinator, Shannon. She will answer your questions, explain the process and guide you through the next steps.

Eventually, a health care professional will then need to submit a formal referral to Ontario Health atHome, including:
• A completed Palliative Care Common Referral Form
• Up-to-date palliative care consultation notes
• A current medication list

Once the referral is received at Hill House, a resident file is created and Shannon will connect with the individual and/or their SDM or POA to gather additional information about care needs.

What happens after a referral is made?

Some referrals are urgent, while others are made well in advance of when admission may be needed. Regardless of the timing, Shannon stays in regular contact with the individual and/or their SDM or POA to reassess needs as circumstances change.

When a bed becomes available, admissions are determined through a triage process that identifies the individual with the greatest need at that time. We understand that waiting for hospice care can be an emotional and uncertain time. Our team makes every effort to be there for those who need us most. Admissions are based on an individual's current care needs, not on how long they have been waiting.

Hill House Hospice was honoured to welcome David West, Mayor, Richmond Hill, Ontario and representatives from the City of Richmond Hill for the presentation of two charitable cheques totaling $14,422.64, in support of our Capital Campaign, BUILDING THE FUTURE OF HOSPICE CARE. Rooted In Community, United In Care.

The donations include proceeds from Mayor West’s Maple Syrup Festival and remaining funds from the late Mayor Dave Barrow’s Charity Golf Tournament, reflecting a meaningful legacy of community care and support.

For nearly 30 years, Hill House Hospice has provided compassionate, expert end-of-life care at no cost to residents and families. This generous support will help advance our plans to rebuild a purpose-designed, 12-bedroom hospice residence in Richmond Hill, ensuring more families can access care when they need it most.

We are deeply grateful to Mayor David West, the City of Richmond Hill, board members and everyone who continue to stand with us.

Together, we are building the future of hospice care.
