This Seniors Month, we're celebrating the older adults at the heart of our community and the care they deserve. đź’™

At Mackenzie Health, older adults make up more than 70 per cent of our inpatients. Their care is complex, and we take that seriously. Our Seniors Care Strategy is our commitment to getting it right, with more personalized care and practical programs, including a new mobility initiative, to keep older adults moving while in hospital.

“Getting up and moving when it’s safe can make a big difference,” says Kelvin, Occupational Therapist and Professional Practice Leader of Rehabilitation with SE Health at Mackenzie Health. In fact, it’s a big part of recovery and staying independent.

Here’s what Kelvin recommends, though he cautions you should always check with your care team about what’s right for you:

✨ Get up and get moving when it’s safe: Sit up for meals and take short walks in your room or hallway — even small steps help build strength and prevent complications.

✨ Move a little, often: Whether you’re in bed or sitting up, wiggle, stretch and shift positions to keep blood flowing and stiffness away.

✨ Sit up and sit tall: Raise your bed or sit in a chair — good posture boosts breathing, energy and recovery.

✨ Keep your brain buzzing: Read, chat or try a puzzle — mental activity supports healing too!

✨ Make everyday tasks count: Brushing your teeth or reaching for your water builds strength and independence.

✨ Make toileting your routine: When safe, walking to the bathroom with your nursing team helps build confidence and functional strength for going home.

Small movements have the power to stay strong, recover faster and maintain independence — every step of the way. 💪

One fall off an e-scooter can lead to a serious brain injury — but the right helmet, properly fitted, can make all the difference.

This Brain Injury Awareness Month, here's how to ride smart, straight from Brigitte, Co-ordinator at York-Simcoe Brain Injury Services, a partnership between Mackenzie Health's Centre for Behaviour Health Sciences and March of Dimes Canada:

• Wear a properly fitted helmet, every single ride
• Inspect your helmet for cracks or damage before riding
• Slow down and stay alert
• Follow traffic laws and local bylaws

During Stroke Awareness Month, we’re sharing Marc’s story — a powerful example of resilience, expert care and the impact of never giving up.

After a sudden stroke, Marc was admitted to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, home to York Region’s District Stroke Centre. When he arrived, he couldn’t walk. After nine weeks of intensive rehabilitation, he was back on his feet.

“There’s no magic,” Marc says. “Recovery takes motivation, patience and hard work. You can sit with your frustration, or you can use that energy to focus on healing and getting stronger.”

Today, Marc is giving back as a peer support volunteer, supporting others on their stroke recovery journey.

Marc’s story is proof that recovery is possible with the right care, support and determination.

Meet Maral, one of our incredible volunteers whose compassion, calm presence and instinct for connection make a real difference.

After her own ER visit, she felt inspired to give back — and today she’s a dedicated GPS and pathology volunteer, guiding patients and visitors, supporting staff and bringing comfort through small but meaningful moments.

Through volunteering, Maral has also grown in unexpected ways. “Volunteering here has allowed me to gain the skills to communicate, delegate and perform to complete the tasks ahead to ensure that operations are moving smoothly,” she says. Just as meaningful are the relationships she’s built along the way, and the deep sense of fulfilment she finds in supporting others using her skills.

Her message to anyone considering volunteering: take the leap. You’ll learn, grow and make a real difference — one interaction at a time.

đź’™ Thank you, Maral, for the compassion and care you bring to our community.

Behind every great hospital are compassionate people making a difference every day.

“Helping others, especially those who can’t care for themselves, is incredibly fulfilling,” says Gliezle, a registered nurse who joined Mackenzie Health from the Philippines.

As a bedside RN and senior team member, Gliezle brings experience, leadership and heart to every shift. Supporting patients through difficult moments, what she values most is providing safe, high-quality care — and bringing comfort and a smile when it’s needed most.

At Mackenzie Health, our people are what make us exceptional.

She's spent her life showing up for others — foster kids, families in crisis, people who had no one else. Then Barb received a stage three colorectal cancer diagnosis. Suddenly, she was the one who needed care.

But she didn't have to face it alone. Mackenzie Health surgeon, Dr. Luke Bui, walked her through everything. The team around her made sure of it.

"I never once felt like I was going through this alone,” she said.

Today, Barb is well into her recovery and already thinking about how she can give back again. Because that's just who she is.

Stories like Barb’s are why we do what we do. To learn more about how you can help make a difference, visit mackenziehealth.ca/donate.

Double the birthdays, double the celebration! 🎂🎂

Twins Mark and Scarlett were the very first babies born at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital on June 6, 2021 — the same day the doors opened and became a full-service community hospital.
As the twins have grown, so has our hospital and the community we serve, and we’re grateful to everyone who has helped and continue to help make moments like these possible. 💙

Happy fifth birthday Mark, Scarlett and Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital!

100 years young and still sharing a beautiful smile. đź’ś

Ratna, a very special Mackenzie Health patient, celebrated her 100th birthday on May 8, an incredible milestone filled with love, reflection and warm wishes from around the world.

Since moving to Canada from Sri Lanka in 2009, Ratna has trusted Mackenzie Health for care and support to continue living with joy and strength.

So, what’s her secret to a long and happy life? Staying positive and staying “playful,” she says, no matter what challenges come your way.

She also credits her family’s love and her deep Buddhist faith for helping her to keep going.

Her family says Ratna’s quiet strength and resilience continue to inspire everyone around her. And it may run in the family – Ratna's grandmother lived to be 104.

Please join us in wishing Ratna a very happy 100th birthday! 🎉
