Having trouble with squats because of your balance? Try using a walker behind you. 🦵
A supported squat with a walker positioned behind you can provide a clear benchmark for how far to lower while giving you an additional safety option if you become unsteady.

The walker can act as a target, helping you practise controlling your descent toward a seated position rather than guessing how low to go.
The focus should be on slow, controlled movement and good technique, not simply squatting as low as possible.
⚠️ The setup and technique should be appropriate for the individual. A walker should be positioned securely, and anyone with significant balance concerns should have guidance from a physiotherapist before trying this independently.

🏡 FisioMed Mobile Clinic brings senior physiotherapy directly to your home, so exercises can be practised safely in the environment where you actually move every day.

Build strength. Practise control. Move with confidence.

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE A 4-PRONGED CANE? 🦯

Not everyone who needs a walking aid needs a walker.
For some people, a 4-pronged cane (quad cane) can provide the extra stability they need while still allowing more freedom of movement than a walker.

A quad cane may be helpful for people who:
✅ Have difficulty with balance
✅ Feel unsteady with a regular single-point cane
✅ Are recovering from a stroke or neurological condition
✅ Have weakness on one side of the body
✅ Are recovering from surgery or injury
✅ Need additional support when walking or transferring
✅ Are progressing from a walker toward a less supportive mobility aid

Why 4 prongs?
Unlike a traditional cane with one point of contact, a quad cane has a four-point base, providing a larger and more stable area of support.
It can also stand independently, which can make it easier to access when getting up from a chair or during daily activities.

But there's an important catch:
A more supportive cane isn't automatically the right cane.

The cane needs to be the correct height, used on the appropriate side, and coordinated properly with your walking pattern. Some people may actually be safer with a regular cane or walker.

🏡 FisioMed Mobile Clinic brings mobility assessments and physiotherapy directly to your home, so we can assess how you actually move in your everyday environment.

The right mobility aid should fit your needs.

The goal isn't just to use a walking aid — it's to walk as safely and independently as possible.

Why train the legs in different directions? 🦵

Because everyday movement requires more than just one type of strength.
Three exercises can work on different parts of functional movement:
Squats help strengthen the hips and thighs used when sitting down, standing up, and transferring.
Standing hip abduction works the outer hip muscles that help stabilize the pelvis during standing and walking.

Standing hip flexion works the muscles used to lift the thigh, an important movement during stepping and walking.

For seniors, the goal isn’t simply to complete a list of exercises. Each movement should have a purpose that connects back to everyday function.
The appropriate level of support, range, repetitions, and difficulty should always match the person’s abilities and needs.

🏡 FisioMed Mobile Clinic brings personalized senior physiotherapy directly to your home, helping you work on the strength and mobility needed for everyday life.

Train with purpose. Keep moving toward greater independence.

For patients with limited mobility, even simple movements such as standing, transferring, or walking can require significant strength and control.

In this exercise, our physiotherapist provides resistance while the patient bends and then presses the knee into full extension, helping activate and strengthen the quadriceps and hamstrings.

We can also progress the exercise by cueing the patient to:
🦵 Push firmly through the heel
🦶 Keep the toes actively gripping
💪 Fully straighten the knee
🎯 Maintain controlled pressure against the therapist
🔁 Focus on a slow, purposeful movement

This type of hands-on strengthening can be especially useful during senior rehabilitation, post-hospital recovery, neurological rehabilitation, deconditioning, and mobility training.
The best part? We come to you.

Fisiomed provides mobile physiotherapy throughout the Greater Vancouver area, bringing individualized rehabilitation into the comfort of your home, assisted-living residence, or care facility.

Movement is medicine—and sometimes the best place to start moving again is at home.

Using a wheelchair doesn’t mean lower-body exercise has to stop. 🦵♿
Exercises can be adapted to a person’s abilities and performed while seated to help maintain movement and strength.

In these clips, we’re working on two movements:
Knee extensions — target the quadriceps, the muscles at the front of the thigh that help straighten the knee and contribute to movements such as standing and transfers.
Seated hip flexion — works the muscles that lift the thigh, supporting movements involved in stepping, walking, and repositioning the legs.
For wheelchair users, the goal doesn’t always have to be independent walking. Maintaining the strength and movement you currently have can also support everyday function and participation.
Exercises should always be selected based on the individual’s abilities, medical needs, and rehabilitation goals.

🏡 FisioMed Mobile Clinic brings personalized physiotherapy directly to your home, adapting rehabilitation to what you can safely do and what matters in your everyday life.
Your mobility may look different. Your movement still matters.

U-Step walker for Parkinson’s: could it help with walking at home? 🚶
Parkinson’s disease can affect walking in different ways, including shorter steps, difficulty turning, and freezing of gait—a brief moment when the feet can feel stuck despite the intention to move.

The U-Step Neuro walker is designed for people experiencing neurological walking challenges. Features include:
✓ A U-shaped base that surrounds the user
✓ Reverse brakes that stop the walker when the handles are released
✓ Optional laser and sound cueing on some models
The laser can provide a visual target for the next step, while sound cueing can provide a rhythm for walking. These strategies may help some people manage freezing, but responses vary.
A U-Step walker will not eliminate freezing or prevent every fall, and it isn’t automatically the right choice for everyone with Parkinson’s.

🏡 FisioMed Mobile Clinic brings mobility assessments directly to your home, allowing us to assess walking, turning, balance, and how a mobility aid works within the hallways, doorways, and spaces you navigate every day.

📍 Serving Surrey, Langley, White Rock, Richmond, Delta, Ladner & surrounding Lower Mainland communities.

The right mobility strategy starts with the person—not just the diagnosis.

Could an upright walker make walking more comfortable? 🚶
Unlike a standard walker that relies mainly on the hand grips for support, an upright walker with padded forearm supports allows some support to be taken through the forearms.

For some people, this design may:
✓ Encourage a more upright walking posture
✓ Shift some pressure away from the hands and wrists
✓ Provide additional support when the legs feel weak

But an upright walker isn’t automatically the right choice for everyone. Proper height, positioning, balance, walking control, and individual mobility needs all matter.

That’s also why trying a mobility aid in the environment where you’ll actually use it can be valuable.

🏡 FisioMed Mobile Clinic provides in-home mobility assessments, allowing us to see how you walk through your actual hallways, doorways, and living spaces, adjust the device appropriately, and practise safe use at home.

📍 Serving Surrey, Langley, White Rock, Richmond, Delta, Ladner & surrounding Lower Mainland communities.
The right walking aid should support the way you need to move.
