Friday’s Food For Thought 💭
If you had to walk with your horse for 15 minutes, would you consider it a workout?
Often, when I give exercises following a bodywork session, owners are surprised when the programme includes a lot of what feels like…well, “nothing”.
-Standing in a relaxed neutral posture
-Purposeful walking
-Gentle rocking
-Watching and waiting for the horse to process and respond
After bodywork, the goal isn’t always to do more. It’s about giving the horse an opportunity to explore new movement patterns, develop body awareness, improve balance and coordination, and allow the body to integrate the changes made during the session.
And yes.. walking can absolutely be work!
Especially when we change our focus from how hard they’re working to HOW the horse is moving.
“But my horse is out 24/7, they already walk all day”
If you’re use to a leisurely stroll through the park, you’re probably going to feel a hike the next day.
I promise you, after a brisk mile ... my heart be PUMPING! 😅😮💨
It’s still “just walking” - but the terrain, pace, balance, effort, duration and quality of movement can completely change the demands on the body.
The difference is your intention.
So next time your horse’s homework looks deceptively simple, ask yourself:
“What is my horse actually having to think about and coordinate?”
Don’t underestimate the walk. It’s not the absence of work. It’s where some of the most important work begins!
