There’s a joke that comedian Jim Gaffigan tells (who has 5 kids) where he comments that having a 5th child for his family was like if you are drowning, and someone throws you a baby 😆
That’s what the perinatal period can feel like for many, many women.
This was me and my monkey April 2017. My son was 2 months old. I was crazy sleep-deprived because he ate every 2-3 hours. I was so, so exhausted.
He started drooling. I happened to be at my GP’s office and said I thought he might be teething. She replied it was too early.
His teeth came out a month later. Not always are our instincts incorrect, even if it’s our first time around. Not all babies follow the same growth trajectory either!
I had pretty bad postpartum anxiety (PPA). The worrying about his growth, the exhaustion, the surprises in breastfeeding and feeding in general, and I went back to work WAY too early for all of that. I put myself on a treatment plan at 6 months only realizing then that I had PPA. None of my health team at the time asked how I was doing.
After I delivered Nolan I remembered seeing women differently, and that we were all in fact rockstars! But that doesn’t mean we don’t need help even if we look put together.
We’re walking for Flora’s walk on Saturday to support perinatal mental health, and if you have a rockstar in your life, come and walk for her! 💕
