Poison Ivy
What is it?
Poison ivy is a straggling or climbing woody vine that's well known for its ability to cause an itchy rash.
Poison ivy can be found in every province except Newfoundland. It grows on sandy, stony, or rocky shores, and sprouts in thickets, in clearings, and along the borders of woods and roadsides.

Treatment
Relieve intense itching using over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream (1%), calamine lotion, and cool compresses. Non-drowsy antihistamines like Claritin (loratadine) or Reactine (cetirizine) help during the day, while Benadryl (diphenhydramine) aids sleep.

What does poison ivy look like?
The leaves of poison ivy have three pointed leaflets. The middle leaflet has a much longer stalk than the two side ones.
They are reddish when they appear in the spring, turn green during the summer, and become various shades of yellow, orange, or red in the fall.

July 28 is World Hepatitis Day

287 million people are living with viral hepatitis – the world’s deadliest communicable disease. Most don’t even know.
Viral hepatitis often shows no symptoms, so many won’t know they have it until it’s too late.

Chronic hepatitis B and C are the world’s leading cause of liver cancer. More than 1.3 million people die because of hepatitis B or C each year – that’s the most of any communicable disease.

Each year, there are nearly two million new cases.

But hepatitis is preventable and treatable. We have fast and accurate tests, effective and affordable treatments, and a proven vaccine for hepatitis B. We already have everything we need to eliminate it.

Get the facts.
~Hepatitis is the world’s deadliest communicable disease, cutting 1.34 million lives short each year.
~There are nearly 2 million new cases of hepatitis every single year.
~More than 287 million people are living with hepatitis B or C. Most don’t even know.
~Hepatitis is the leading cause of liver cancer.
~We already have everything we need to eliminate hepatitis by 2030. What we need is action.

Swimming safety
Did you know that one of the leading causes of death in children ages 1 to 4 is drowning? Carefully supervise your children, secure the area around your backyard pool and teach your children about water safety. This can help prevent serious injuries and death.

Children can drown very quickly and quietly, even in just a few centimetres of water. Lock access to all water (even shallow portable pools) when an adult is not present.

Keep young children and inexperienced swimmers in view and within arm's reach at all times when they are in water. This will reduce the risk of serious injury.

Pool safety
Every year children drown in backyard swimming pools. Children ages 1 to 4 are most at risk.

~Build a fence that is at least 1.2 metres high all the way around your pool.
~Check with your town or city to find out the rules for building a pool fence.
~Install a gate that is self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be beyond a child's reach. Keep the gate locked at all times.

Prepare for pool safety
Be prepared for pool safety or emergencies.
Keep lifesaving equipment (such as a safety ring with a rope) and a first aid kit near the pool.
