💜 Join Us for International Overdose Awareness Day 💜

On August 28, our team will be joining community partners at King Square from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day.

This important event is an opportunity to come together in remembrance of those we have lost, support those who are grieving, and strengthen our collective commitment to compassionate responses to substance use and overdose.

We invite our community to stop by, connect with local organizations, access resources, and stand with us in raising awareness and reducing stigma.

Our book club has been enjoying reading The Wedding People by Alison Espach during the final weeks of August. 📖☀️

This read balances a light-hearted tone with emotional depth that doesn’t shy away from serious conversations around infertility, depression, and su***de. Espach leans into dark humour as our middle-aged protagonist, Phoebe, is trying to make sense of a life that looks nothing like the one she once imagined.

💭 “By letting her guard down, Phoebe makes others feel safe to do the same. It’s a great reminder of how vulnerability deepens our connections.” – Julie Trites, Sophia Book Club Leader & Board Member

What are your first impressions of Phoebe and the unlikely connections that she forms at the hotel?

A group of our staff and guests from Sussex and Saint John spent a fulfilling day connecting through nature out on the water kayaking. 🌊

This outing was part of Sophia Recovery Centre’s Across Programming, which offers personalized one-to-one or small group outings led by support workers and mentors. These small excursions successfully promote social connection, community engagement, and well-being.

For one guest, kayaking has long been on her bucket list. She shared that trying something new felt both intimidating and exciting, and she was proud to be achieving a dream.

This is what recovery can look like. 💛

Since moving into our Saint John location in 2024, we have helped hundreds of women and families on their recovery journeys. Through peer mentoring, group therapy, creative arts programming, and other supportive services, we continue to provide a safe and welcoming space for healing and growth.

As the need for our programs continues to grow, our current space is no longer large enough to meet the demand in our community. While preparing for the expansion of our North End Centre, we turned to the community for a storage solution. We are grateful to Landmark Storage for providing storage space as we prepare for the expansion of our North End Centre and navigate increasing demand for our services.

Their support is helping us make room for this next chapter while continuing to serve women and families in our community. Thank you, Landmark Storage, for supporting recovery in our community. ❤️‍🩹📦

As we continue preparing for our North End Centre expansion, community support is helping make this vision possible. To learn more or donate, visit https://sophiarecoverycentre.com/give-back/more-room-for-recovery/

Our guests in Sussex have planted two large garden beds full of vegetables and fruits. Guests have been connecting through nature in maintaining the plots as a community. 👩‍🌾

Their hard work has already paid off with lettuce from the garden beds being used to make Caesar salad for community lunches! There are tomatoes and pepper plants growing, with plans to harvest and preserve the vegetables this fall. 🍅🫑

This is what recovery can look like. A social opportunity to connect and heal alongside other folks on their own recovery journey. ❤️‍🩹

A warm thank you to Brooke from KV Domestic Violence Outreach, who came into the Saint John Centre and gave a presentation to our guests on healthy relationships.

Relationships are an important part of every recovery journey. Education about healthy, supportive, and respectful relationships can empower women with the tools they need to build strong connections and protect their well-being.

Thank you, Brooke, for sharing your knowledge and supporting the women in our community. 💜
