💙🧶 June is Deafblind Awareness Month, and we are proud to celebrate the incredible partnerships, creativity, and community spirit that help bring awareness to deafblindness throughout our region.

A heartfelt thank you to Leslie and the team at DeafBlind Ontario Services for their leadership, support, and dedication to fostering accessibility, inclusion, communication, and connection for individuals who are deafblind.

We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to our amazing residents, knitting club members, staff, volunteers, and community partners whose countless hours of knitting, planning, and hard work made this year's Yarn Bombing initiative such a success. Your creativity continues to transform public spaces into meaningful conversations about awareness and inclusion.

This year, we are thrilled to have Yarn Bombing displays featured at White Oaks Mall, the Elevated Bridge, and the St. Thomas Public Library. These colourful and tactile installations help build understanding, spark curiosity, and connect our community to the experiences of individuals who are deafblind.

We were also honoured to meet with Mayor Joe Preston as the City of St. Thomas officially proclaimed June as Deafblind Awareness Month. This recognition helps shine a spotlight on the achievements, contributions, and experiences of people who are deafblind while encouraging greater accessibility and inclusion for all.

Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, talent, and support to this important initiative. Together, we are creating connections, raising awareness, and making our community a more inclusive place for everyone.

💙🧶

"Five years ago today, Friday May 28, 2021, We (Laura and Reg Miller) moved to Royal Oak. It was a big decision to make, but we were ready to be relieved of upkeep and maintenance of a large house and yard. Our move-in date had been scheduled for June the first, but the movers changed it at the last moment, came in the morning, so it was a scramble to get ready. It also happened to be a rainy day, which didn't help matters. First off, Reg's son Martin came and picked up Reg and drove to Royal Oak, where they were served a sandwich in Harry's bar.
Back home on South Edgeware in St Thomas, I had to make some quick decisions as to what was to be loaded and unloaded first. Within a couple of hours the essentials had been unloaded and staff was busy setting things up. I drove out in time to have our first meal dinner time together with the two women who moved in before us. What a relief to go to bed that night, thanking God , and knowing we were in a safe and comfortable place.
There have been many changes in the five years. The staff was amazing how they coped with lock-downs, emergencies and unexpected happenings. Through it all we have gotten good care, really appreciate our spacious home and I can't think of a better place in which to spend our aging years."

Happy 5th Anniversary to Laura and Reg at Royal Oak Senior Living! 🎉

What began as a big life decision on a rainy day in May 2021 has turned into five years filled with comfort, care, friendship, and wonderful memories. Your story is such a beautiful reminder of finding peace and community in a place that truly feels like home.

Wishing you both continued happiness, good health, and many more cherished memories in the years ahead! ❤️

Nothing beats good food and great company!

Last night at Ignite Youth Centre we served up delicious ribs, potato wedges, fresh salad, and shared plenty of laughs and smiles along the way. Seeing everyone come together and enjoy a great meal reminds us how important community really is.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to give back and be part of such an amazing evening.

Moving-in Day May 15, 2021
Starting early in the morning the “movers” arrived to load their truck with the furniture I was taking to my new residence at “R.O.”. This move was in the midst of Covid-19 and I was isolated for 14 days on 1st street - all by myself. Once I was out of isolation and able to get to the dining room, I shared a table with Margie (now deceased). She welcomed me with a red rose and a great smile! The staff was great and one of the head ones said, “This is a new chapter in your life, with new surroundings, and enjoy your new home”.
Yes, I have seen many changes, made new friends, but kept the old ones too. There are many great workers here and the food is something to boast about. As for the maintenance man – Well, he keeps you smiling.
If you have recently arrived, remember, yes, it’s an adjustment, which takes time. Sit back, relax, get involved in activities and enjoy your new home.
