Breast-feeding may be the way nature intended us to feed, but it often gets mistaken for being easy, and In today’s day and age it’s actually even harder because there is less support available built in to the system, the workplace expects more of young families and puts pressure on returning to work. It has become a lot harder for people in North America to exclusively breast-feed. As a lactation consultant who does support people through a variety of feeding preferences, I would highly encourage doing your research before baby is born, getting the prenatal breast-feeding classes and finding your resources before you need them, because even tho it’s natural it isn’t necessarily easy physically or emotionally.

I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Breastfeeding is REALLY important for both moms and babies, and the science of the milk cannot be duplicated or compared to anything else if we compare apples to apples.

However, if and when breastmilk is not available, or a mother cannot produce her own milk, or doesn’t want to, that does not mean mom is inferior for choosing what is needed to ensure the baby is fed.

We need to continue to help educate our health care system and our families on WHY getting breast milk is important and should be thought of as first choice for infant nutrition, and because of all the benefits mom receive to her own body while giving her baby breast milk. The art of breastfeeding is designed to help moms body and uterus to return back to size and function from the first breastfeed. It helps mom and baby regulate together. An amazing attachment is curated during this process. This helps eliminate diseases, cancer, illness between the mom and baby. There is a MUCH bigger picture that happens during this process than most of us realize.

Even when it comes to the environment, breastfeeding helps reduce waste, with no bottles, or garbage.

However, we do need to be mindful and kind to those who cannot produce milk (or enough) for their babies because it happens.

We also need to be supportive to those who need to use formula when no other option is available, and to those who choose to use formula.

But most importantly we cannot stop educating around the benefits of the science behind the process and the milk, because informed choices are important!

We need more education around the benefits to mom and baby on breastfeeding and breastmilk, so that people CAN make INFORMED choices, and seek the support they need.

Phrases like “fed is best” or “you can’t tell a breastfed baby from a formula fed baby by looking at them” does not compare apples to apples, does not include the science or the relevancy of breastmilk to formula, and certainly starts a war between moms and families, that is not supportive in nature and is only hurting us, or filling people with shame.

We need to support one another, show kindness and allow people to make choices on true and factual information.

And as an IBCLC I support people through all forms of feeding. There is certainly a time and a place for the need for formula. It changes for every family. But my job is to also educate and reduce harm (physical or emotional) throughout the process, by giving informed consent. 🙂

Be better, together.

This text update just made me WHOLE day. I love hearing from past clients with updates and pictures of their littles and how they are doing. Thank you for filling my bucket today! I am just one mom trying to help another. I take the highs and lows with my clients too; updates like this remind me of how important it is to keep going, to help be the light during what can seem like a dark period as we get through breastfeeding and transition to parenting challenges 💞 (shared with permission).

I’m proud to share that I’ve officially completed my recertification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) through International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.

Behind that credential are countless hours of education, ongoing professional development, updated research review, clinical practice, and a continued commitment to evidence-based care for the families I support.

Recertification is not just a title renewal. It means continuing to invest time, energy, and yes, thousands of dollars, each term, into staying current with infant feeding research, maternal health, ethics, and safe clinical practice so families receive accurate, up-to-date support.

When families seek lactation support, they deserve someone who is not only compassionate, but also accountable to professional standards and continuing education. Feeding challenges can feel overwhelming, emotional, and sometimes isolating. Having someone in your corner who is trained to assess, support, educate, and help guide decisions can make a meaningful difference.

I’m incredibly grateful to continue supporting moms, babies, and families through every stage of their feeding journey, from prenatal education to complex feeding challenges and everything in between. I can’t always solve every problem, but I always put 110% into supporting you!

Thank you to every family who has trusted me to be part of such an important season of life. 🤍

How and where a baby grows on a chart is so individual, and we can’t expect a one size fits all for where a baby will be, because there are many variables, (genetics, parents own characteristics, physical conditions or disease, milk vs formula etc). What’s important is that your baby continues to grow in a positive way, wherever they are at on the growth chart! To this day we still have and see SO many discrepancies on “where” a baby should be, and many people including health care providers may not fully understand and give poor advice. We often see this in babies who are on the smaller % scale, but are still growing as they should.

Just like in the fictional Minnesota town of Lake Wobegon, where “all the children are above average,” many parents believe there is something wrong if their breastfeeding baby’s weight isn’t above the 50th percentile. While it is human to want our children to excel, the assumption that babi...
