Starting high school is one of the biggest transitions in a young person’s life.

For many teens, beginning high school brings excitement, but it can also bring uncertainty.

New classmates. A larger school. Greater expectations. Different teachers. More independence. Questions like “Will I fit in?” or “What if I can’t keep up?” are more common than many people realise.

Some teenagers become quiet. Others seem irritable, overwhelmed, or withdraw from family and friends. These are often signs that they’re adjusting to change, not that they’re failing.

Parents can help by listening without rushing to solve every problem, maintaining familiar routines at home, encouraging healthy sleep and nutrition, and reminding their teen that it takes time to settle into something new.

The transition to high school doesn’t have to be faced alone. With the right support, this period of change can become an opportunity to build confidence, resilience, and new friendships.

If your teen is struggling with the transition to high school, we’re here to help.

Many people tell me:

“I know why I react this way… so why do I still react this way?”

The answer often lies in how trauma affects the brain and nervous system.

In my newest blog article, I explain:

🧠 What Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas do
🧠 How trauma changes the brain’s survival system
🧠 The difference between Big “T” and little “t” trauma
🧠 Why insight alone doesn’t always change our emotional reactions
🧠 How EMDR combines top-down and bottom-up processing to support healing

Understanding your brain can be the first step towards understanding yourself.

If you’ve ever wondered why you can know you’re safe but still feel unsafe, this article is for you.

Have you ever sat quietly beside someone and felt comforted without needing to talk?

That experience has a name: parallel play, and it isn’t just for children.

In my latest blog article, I explore how adults, particularly those with histories of trauma, emotional neglect, or insecure attachment, can heal simply by sharing safe space with another person. Sometimes healing doesn’t begin with words. Sometimes it begins with presence.

If you’ve ever found conversation overwhelming but still longed for connection, this article may resonate with you.

I’d love for you to have a read and let me know your thoughts.

Today’s office blend was one of my favourites:

I used 5 drops Harvest Spice and 4 drops Ylang Ylang.

Harvest Spice creates a warm, comforting atmosphere that many people associate with feelings of safety, grounding, and home. The familiar spice notes can help make a space feel welcoming and relaxing.

Ylang Ylang offers a beautiful floral balance. It is often used in aromatherapy to encourage relaxation, reduce feelings of tension, and promote emotional calm.

Together, these two aromas create a space that feels both grounded and soothing, warm enough to help you settle in, yet gentle enough to encourage openness and reflection. It’s a lovely combination for psychotherapy, where feeling safe and emotionally regulated can make it easier to connect with yourself.

Many of the ways we think, feel, and relate to others begin much earlier than we realise.

My latest blog article explores primal wounds; how early experiences can shape our relationships, emotions, self-worth, and nervous system throughout adulthood.

If you’ve ever wondered “Why do I react this way?”, this article may offer a new perspective.

Ever wonder why some people stay calm under pressure while others feel overwhelmed or panicked?

It might not be about personality or willpower at all.

Our nervous system is shaped by our life experiences, and for many people, anxiety and panic are signs of a highly sensitised survival system rather than weakness.

In my latest blog article, I explore why this happens, how childhood experiences can influence how we respond to stress as adults, and, most importantly, why healing is possible.

If you've ever wondered, "Why do I react this way?", I hope you'll take a few minutes to read it.

Why Do Some People Stay Calm Under Stress While Others Panic?

Why Is It So Hard to Accept Help?

Some people have no problem offering support to others.

But when someone offers to help them, they immediately respond:

“I’m fine.”
“I’ve got it.”
“Don’t worry about me.”

If this sounds familiar, it may not be independence.

It may be a survival strategy.

For many people, self-reliance wasn’t a personality trait; it was something they learned early in life. Perhaps there wasn’t a trusted adult to turn to, asking for help was met with criticism or disappointment, or they discovered that depending on others wasn’t emotionally safe.

Over time, the nervous system adapts.

“I can only rely on myself.”

As adults, these individuals often become incredibly capable. They are dependable, hardworking, and the first to support others. Yet beneath that strength can be a quiet discomfort with receiving care.

Accepting help may feel unfamiliar, vulnerable, or even unsafe.

Healing isn’t about becoming less independent.

It’s about developing the ability to recognise when you no longer have to carry everything on your own.

Sometimes, one of the greatest signs of healing isn’t learning to give.

It’s learning to receive.

💬 Does accepting help feel easy for you, or is it something you’ve had to learn?
