I am a mother of two, with a third on the way, living in the beautiful Shuswap. It has been through my own birthing experiences that I decided to take a Doula training course in 2022. I am now on another path, the Unassisted Path Mentorship as a Birthkeeper, although I will be on maternity leave beginning this June 2024. Last week I got to be with my best friend during the birth of her second child. I feel so grateful to support her.

She had a successful VBAC at 37+3 weeks after having her membranes rupture at 33+6.

I love you, i'm so proud of you!

This is just my personal opinion, but pushing is my favorite part of labour. The sensations change from one intensity to another, that feels more purposeful, and gives you something to do with the energy in your body.

It is the best part, definitely not the easiest, its still hard work. But now you know how close you are to meeting your baby.

Now if I'd only had one child, I wouldnt be able to have this opinion. Because my daughter was acynclitic and pushing was agony, and ultimately ended in cesarean.

But with my second born, even pushing with him for 1.5 hours or so, it felt so good, such a relief to be through transition and switching energies. And he crowned for several contractions.

I know women talk about and fear the ring of fire. It is the quickest part of the entire experience and truly nothing to fear.

Tell me if you disagree, share your personal experiences with me.

Unfortunately, it took going through trauma, PTSD, and two hospital births to gain my internal knowing — to find my internal power and my authority over self. To stop looking to others, including my partner, and to defer only to myself and my choices for the way I wanted to birth.

Birth is an extremely vulnerable time in a woman’s life. It is important to find a way to anchor your mind to your desires in birth, so that when anyone with outside “authority” asks questions, suggests interventions, or begins coercive measures for compliance, a woman can still respond from the decisions she made prior to birth.

It is okay to express every feeling, without feeling the need to tone yourself down. It is okay if they don’t like you. It is okay to be that “difficult” patient.

You can stay grounded in your convictions, even in your most primal brain.

Can you think of any non-birth-related ways in which you’ve owned your personal sovereignty? Or share your birth experience where you owned your birth?

I support birth as a physiological process first and foremost. The way I work is grounded in understanding how the body is designed to function in pregnancy, labour, birth, and postpartum — and what helps or hinders that physiology.

I’m not neutral about birth; I’m very clear about the way I think when I meet families. I believe parents are active participants in their birth experience, not passive recipients of care. Preparation isn’t just physical — it involves mental, emotional, and belief-level work. I support clients who are willing to learn, reflect, and take responsibility for their choices rather than outsourcing decision-making out of fear or convenience.

Alignment matters to me more than accommodation. I’m not the right fit for everyone, and I don’t try to be. I value honesty early on so that the support I offer is clean, ethical, and sustainable for both myself and the families I work with.

Even with strong views, I don’t coerce or pressure. I believe true autonomy includes clear information, real choice, and the freedom to opt in or out. My role isn’t to convince — it’s to support those who are genuinely open to this approach.

Birth matters, and how we approach it matters.

Welcome to the world, Josey! Such a sweet little thing! 💕

Her mama worked so hard, labouring for half a day before choosing a repeat cesarean due to extenuating circumstances. It was such a tough decision, and I’m so proud of this mama for giving her daughter the gift of choosing her own birthday and experiencing the incredible hormones of labour that help ease the transition to the outside world. What a beautiful beginning 😍

I also found a birthkeeper that I aligned with spiritually, and educated my husband on physiological birth, and potential negative outcomes. He was definitely my rock, and his prayers kept me grounded.
