Why I became a dental hygienist 👇

16 years ago I started this work because I wanted to help people in a way that felt practical and human. Not 5-minute visits. Not factory-line care.

Hygiene is the part of dentistry where you actually get to know someone. I see my patients regularly, watch their oral health change over years, and get to be part of preventing problems instead of just fixing them.

When I opened Carrie The Toothfairy, the goal was simple:
✨ Real time per appointment
✨ A calm room, no judgment
✨ Honest answers about what your mouth actually needs
✨ Care that fits your budget and your life

If you've been hesitant to come back to the chair or you're starting fresh somewhere new, this is a soft landing.

Real talk: Bad breath isn't always about food 🦷🧚🏼‍♀️

The actual causes (in order of how often I see them):

1️⃣ Tongue bacteria: That coating on the tongue is the largest harbour of bacteria in the whole mouth.
2️⃣ Dry mouth: Less saliva = more odour
3️⃣ Bleeding and inflammed gums
4️⃣ Old dental work with gaps that trap food
5️⃣ Sinus, stomach and sleep issues

Commercial mouthwash masks it for 20 minutes. It also kills good bacteria in your mouth and can make the odours intensify along with other issues
No quick fixes:
☑️ Brush your tongue, use recommended products from your oral health professionals
☑️ Floss daily (or interdental brush)
☑️ Hydrate
☑️ Professional cleanings, regular dental checkup’s and staying on top of old, breaking down restorative work.

Quick CDCP truth bomb 💣

If you're a Canadian resident, file your taxes, and your adjusted family income is under $90,000, you may already qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

Common myths I hear daily:
❌ "It's only for seniors" - wrong. All ages now eligible.
❌ "Hygiene isn't covered" - covered. Often at $0.
❌ "You can only see specific dentists" - wrong, any provider accepting CDCP.

I see CDCP patients every week. Hygiene visits. Cleanings. Exams. Often $0 out of pocket.

Iced coffee season hit different this year? 🧋☕

Your tooth enamel has microscopic ridges that trap pigment. Coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries → stain molecules wedge in and stay.

What helps:
☑️ Drink coffee/iced tea through a straw
☑️ Rinse with water after staining drinks
☑️ Use an electric toothbrush (better surface cleaning)
☑️ Professional polish or whitening for what's already there

The drugstore strips? Low concentration + bad fit = modest results. Pola take-home or in-office is the real fix.

When your space is clear of clutter it allows you to see more clearly. I’ve been needing to overhaul my garage and poorly designed kitchen. Got r done but if wasn’t easy.
