June is Cataract Awareness Month! A cataract forms when the clear lens inside your eye becomes cloudy. It can affect vision and generally develops as people get older. Cataracts can develop slowly over many years or rapidly progress over a few months. When a cataract is “ripe”, it can be easily treated with cataract surgery.
Regular eye exams are the best way to know if they are developing.

April is Women's Eye Health and Safety Month! WHO says that women are at greater risk of developing eye conditions associated with ageing and are more likely to have major vision problems, including:
Age-related Macular Degeneration
Autoimmune Diseases (such as Lupus or Sjögren’s Syndrome)
Cataract
Dry Eye
Glaucoma
Low Vision
Thyroid Eye Disease
Refractive Error

Happy World Optometry Day! The World Council of Optometry's initiative is to make eye care a human right. By making eye care more accessible, common vision conditions can be treated and avoidable blindness can be prevented in both children and adults.

March is National Nutrition Month!
Here are some nutrition tips for your eye health:
1) Leafy greens are full of anti-oxidants to protect against the damaging effects of UV rays.
2) Colourful fruits and veggies are full of Vitamin C, also an anti-oxidant.
3) Hummus! Chickpeas, as well as other legumes, contain Zinc which helps your liver release and drive Vitamin A to the retina to produce melanin to protect your eyes from ultraviolet light.
4) Fish! Omega 3s can help protect against age-related macular degeneration and dry eye.
5) Orange veggies! Carrots, yams and sweet potatos are packed with beta-carotene, an antioxidant that can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

AMD , Aged-Related Macular Degeneration, is the leading cause of blindness in North America for those over the age of 55! It is painless and the first sign is a blurriness of the central vision. Low vision is a loss of eyesight that cannot be sufficiently improved with conventional glasses, contact lenses, medical treatments, or surgical interventions. Regular eye exams can help with early detection.
