A quick clarification: when families choose McCormack Aquamation, their loved one is not being sent to Hamilton or Chatham. We perform every Aquamation right here in Sarnia–Lambton.
Because we have the only Aquamation equipment in the region — and the best price — there’s no need for long-distance transport. That means less driving, lower cost, fewer emissions, and a more environmentally friendly choice for your family.

If you want real answers, talk to the people who actually do the work — not the ones making up stories about it.

Friends of mine recently chose Aquamation. They were comfortable, confident, and ready. Then — at the very last minute — they asked to “talk again” because they’d heard some things. They heard this from an employee who was simply repeating what the owner of the transfer service had told him.

So guess what they heard:
• “Aquamation uses mostly chemicals.”
False, 95% water, 5 % alkali (Aqua is Latin for water, not chemical)
• “It takes massive energy.”
When compared, 1600 – 2000 F for cremation vs 300 F for Aquamation. Aquamation operates at a lower temperature, requiring considerably less energy, up to 1/8 the energy.
• “They still burn the bones afterward.”
False, there is reason why they are Aquamated remains are white, they are not exposed to flame, so they are not charred. We dry the bone in a medical grade convection oven, where they remain white.

Every single claim was false. And every one of them traced back to a single business that doesn’t operate Aquamation equipment and has no firsthand knowledge of the process. While they’re trying to steer people away from Aquamation, they will offer to “send your loved one out of Lambton County” if you really want Aquamation. That’s a whole other story.
This is exactly the problem: We are the provider. We own the equipment. We run the process. We know the science, the workflow, and the environmental impact. We don’t rely on rumours — we rely on facts.
There’s innocent misunderstanding… and then there’s deliberate misinformation designed to scare families away from a choice they deserve to understand. Even now we have funeral homes signing up with us to be their Aquamation provider because they want the most advanced, modern method of caring for the families they serve.
By the way, my friends are staying with me. Not because they now fully understand the process, but because they were given accurate information about both cremation and Aquamation and could make an informed choice. They chose Aquamation.

Transparency is the foundation of every conversation I have.

I had to sign a formal letter with the BAO (Bereavement Authority of Ontario) when I became licensed to operate Aquamation — Standard Conditions for Alternative Disposition Operator (Hydrolysis) License Class, Site License Number AH 0014600, to be exact. In that letter, I agreed that as a provider I “shall not describe the hydrolysis process as having any benefit or advantage over other forms of disposition or disparage other forms of disposition.” That includes cremation. That’s the rule. That’s the standard. And I follow it.
Even with the equipment on site and the ability to perform Aquamation myself, if a family wants cremation, I send their loved one for cremation. I’m here to serve.

But here’s the part that doesn’t sit right:
Funeral Directors who don’t own Aquamation equipment, don’t operate it, and aren’t licensed to provide it are out there saying whatever they want — including things I’m legally prohibited from saying.
If the BAO’s mandate is to protect the consumer, how is it acceptable that a non provider can spread fear, confusion, and outright misinformation about a process they’ve never operated, and licensed by the BAO? How is a licensed operator held to a higher standard than someone with no accountability?
Families deserve protection from misinformation — not protection from the people who actually know what they’re doing.

Water is perferred.

Well, as it turns out, when people are choosing a place to be scattered, water is coming out on top across the various groups I’ve posted in. There were some interesting alternatives shared as well.

Thank you to everyone who offered their preference. It’s striking how many people felt a meaningful, personal connection to water.

About scattering….

Building on yesterday’s post about scattering, I’ve been reflecting on how deeply place ties into memory. If you could choose anywhere to be scattered, where would it be? A shoreline, a garden, a forest, a place that shaped you — or maybe somewhere that simply brings peace.
Honestly, I might pick centre ice at a Leafs game at Scotiabank Arena. Aquamains are white… they’d blend right in. Could happen.
I’d be interested to hear yours.

I get asked this a lot.

Is it illegal to scatter Aquamated or cremated remains in Ontario?

No — it is not.
Ontario allows families to scatter both cremated and Aquamated remains as long as it’s done respectfully and in an appropriate location.

You can scatter on:

Crown land — including lakes, rivers, and unoccupied natural areas

The Great Lakes and connecting waterways

Municipal parks or public spaces (as long as there’s no local by‑law against it)

Private property — with the owner’s permission, golf clubs for example.

There’s no permit required, and Aquamated remains are treated exactly the same as cremated remains under Ontario law.

Families often tell me this gives them a sense of freedom — the ability to choose a place that truly meant something. If you ever have questions about scattering, Aquamation, or planning ahead, I’m always here to help.
