There is no doubt that the comments “well we are all on the spectrum” or “we are all a little autistic” often come with the intentions of being empathetic and accepting. However this is not how it is likely received and can minimize the experiences of autistic people.

“If you can’t match an autistic person’s life experiences, don’t claim their identity”

If we were all a little autistic, then inclusive practices wouldn’t be new. Malls, stores, and schools wouldn’t be so overwhelming, the list could go on and on.

We wouldnt say to someone with depression “we all get sad sometimes” so why do it to autistic people?

✨ Spectrum Beginnings ✨

This course is one that sits incredibly close to my heart.

When families first enter the world of autism, it can feel overwhelming… full of information, opinions, and pressure to “do the right thing.” But not all information is created equal.

I created Spectrum Beginnings because I want families to have access to the right information. Information that is neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based, and grounded in both clinical knowledge and the lived experiences of the autistic community.

This isn’t about “fixing” your child.
It’s about understanding them.
Connecting with them.
Supporting them in a way that honours who they are.

When we hear “spectrum” we are often led to think about a linear system. Severe versus mild. Low functioning versus high functioning.

Autism is a spectrum, yes. However the problem with thinking of this spectrum as a linear system lumps together common differences shared by autistics and ignores the individuality and unique characteristics that make up a person.

⋒ Low Functioning
Traditionally used to describe those without verbal communication. However this term dismisses the voice and abilities these people have and doesn’t allow us to presume competence.

One of my favourite quotes comes from Ido Kedar, a non-speaking autistic author and advocate. He said, “Not only was my mind fully present and understanding everything, but I read fluently. I thought of retorts, jokes, and comments all day long in my head. Only no one else knew. So I was talked to like a toddler, not given a real education, and kept bored and sad.”

⋒ High Functioning
Traditionally used to describe autistics with verbal speech. This term is equally as damaging as it dismisses the struggles these people go through. As a result, the same supports and accommodations are not provided.

🌟Enter Autism Spectrum Wheel!
The wheel features a collection of traits. It helps those around the individual understand their unique needs. Someone who is “high functioning” may have a strength in verbal communication, but be substantially impacted by differences in executive functioning and regulation. The wheel shows this!

🌟What can we say instead?
Great question! Rather than using the above terms, we can simple describe the persons strengths and areas of need. “Jane is autistic and communicates with verbal speech. She is greatly impacted by busy environments and needs support regulating in these times.”

A lot of new faces here! Hello 👋🏼 and meet the Spectrum team!

With April being Autism Acceptance Month, it has me reflecting on how incredibly grateful I am to be surrounded by a team of passionate, thoughtful, and neurodiversity affirming therapists.

Every single person on our team shows up with a deep respect for the children and families we support, leading with connection, curiosity, and a strengths based lens. This work is so much more than strategies and sessions. It’s about creating spaces where kids feel safe to be exactly who they are.

That same gratitude extends to our partnerships with Julia of Playful Hearts OT and Kendall of Whimsy Counselling & Consulting. Collaborating with professionals who share these values allows us to support families in a way that feels meaningful.

Autism Acceptance Month is not just about awareness, it’s about listening, learning, and continuously doing better. It’s about honouring autistic voices, embracing different ways of communicating and being, and building environments where all kids are seen, supported, and celebrated.

So today, and every day, I’m feeling incredibly thankful for this community we’ve built together 🤍

April is Autism Acceptance Month ♾️

Not just awareness. Not just understanding.
Acceptance.

Acceptance means honouring differences in communication, connection, regulation, and experience and not trying to reshape them into something more “typical.”

Because the goal was never to fit in.
The goal is to belong.

We can’t get to true acceptance without awareness, but it has to be the right awareness.
The kind that comes from autistic voices.
The kind that challenges outdated narratives.
The kind that asks us to shift our expectations, not the person.

This month, we invite you to move beyond awareness, listen to autistic voices, reflect on your own assumptions, and advocate for environments that support regulation, autonomy, and dignity.

At Spectrum, we choose books intentionally, and unfortunately all books are not created equally! The right book can support language, comprehension, and connection all at once.
