SCCL Optimizing calf, lamb and kid beginnings with colostrum perfected by science, nature and care.

Since 1994 SCCL has been dedicated to providing all natural bovine colostrum products to our customers worldwide. Our success is driven by years of research by veterinary immunologists from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine who continue to lead a team of scientists creating the best colostrum products in the world. SCCL is a privately held biosciences company specializing in developing and producing innovative colostrum products from healthy dairy cows approved to produce milk for human consumption. Scientists at SCCL have developed methods of accurately measuring some of the key immunological, metabolic, and nutritional components found in colostrum. Using these assays, in combination with a proprietary processing method that preserves the levels of key components, SCCL produces spray dried, refined colostrum products that contain specified levels of important ingredients. We are proud to introduce our new instant mix technology in our colostrum products; offering easy and complete mixing in seconds. Our colostrum is tested for potency, purity, safety and efficacy to guarantee an end product that meets the highest quality control specifications for global distribution. Our facility and products are licensed by stringent regulatory agencies including the CFIA, USDA, SAGARPA, NASC, and others. Our facility is GMP certified by Health Canada and produces NHPD licensed products. We offer our products in many countries including Canada, the United States, Mexico, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Israel and the United Kingdom. We intend to increase our exporting capability and are open to developing relationships with parties interested in importing our products in a variety of formats. SCCL manufactures colostrum products for calves, lambs, kid goats, pets, and people.

Same farm. Same week. Very different colostrum. 🐄

When researchers tested 827 colostrum samples from 67 US dairies, IgG levels ranged from under 1 g/L to 200 g/L, and nearly 30% of samples fell below 50 g/L. Age mattered too: first-calf heifers averaged less than half the IgG of cows in their third lactation or later.

You can't tell by looking. A Brix refractometer takes seconds and tells you exactly what you're working with. 📏

Not all colostrum is equal, even on the same farm.

Colostrum quality can change a lot from one cow to the next. A few of the things that affect it:
🐄 Age: first-calf heifers tend to produce lower-IgG colostrum than older cows
⏱️ Timing: the sooner colostrum is collected after calving, the better
☀️ Season and dry period: heat stress and dry-period management can play a role
🍼 Volume: a cow that produces lots of colostrum isn't a guarantee of high quality

That's why testing every batch matters. Tomorrow we'll share what the research shows 👀

Every calf will encounter challenges. The question is whether they’re prepared to fight back.

In this clip, Dr. Lucia Pisoni explains why the goal isn’t to eliminate every microorganism or stressor a calf may face. It’s to build the immune resilience needed to respond to those challenges.

Part one of our new Beyond Colostrum episode with Chuck Stokke and Dr. Lucia Pisoni explores what colostrum keeps doing in the gut after day one, and why transition feeding is one of the most underused tools in preweaning calf health.

One product on the shelf instead of three. 🐄🐑🐐

Total Colostrum Care™ is a whole bovine colostrum powder made for calves, lambs and goat kids, so mixed farms don't need a different product for every species.

🔄 Replace: when maternal colostrum is missing, poor quality or unsafe
⬆️ Supplement: when there isn't enough, or it tests low
➕ Support: as post-day-one growth support for calves

Did your cows spend their dry period in the summer heat? ☀️➡️🍂

Research from the University of Florida found that calves whose mothers were heat-stressed in late pregnancy were born lighter, weighed less at weaning, and absorbed less IgG from colostrum. The surprising part: the colostrum itself wasn't the problem. The calves were simply less able to absorb it.

That's why this fall's calves may need a little extra help from day one. Test your colostrum, enrich when needed, feed enough of it, and feed it fast.

Fall calves are just the best. 🍂🐄

Quick tip for this time of year: fall days can be mild while the nights get properly cold. A calf that looks comfortable at noon chores may be chilly by 2 a.m., so check bedding at evening chores, not just in the morning.

Happy Friday!

Colostrum’s job isn’t finished after Day 1. 💡🐄

Supplementing calves with colostrum during the transition period has been associated with fewer respiratory issues, less loose manure, higher average daily gain, and more active calves.

That’s why transition feeding is becoming an important part of calf nutrition programs focused on supporting health and performance beyond passive transfer.

High IgG isn't the whole story.

Bacteria in colostrum can get in the way of antibody absorption, which means a great batch can still let your calf down if it's contaminated. Today's DCHA Gold Standards set the bar at under 50,000 cfu/mL for fresh colostrum, and under 20,000 cfu/mL for heat-treated colostrum.

Swipe through to see where bacteria sneak in. Here’s how you can avoid it:
✅ Prep teats like you would for milking, and use a clean bucket
✅ Feed colostrum fresh, or chill it quickly
✅ Wash and sanitize bottles and ni***es after every use
✅ Keep a separate tube feeder for sick calves, and replace scratched tubes

Today is World Mental Health Day. 💙

Caring for animals means early mornings, late nights, and carrying a lot, including the tough days when you lose one you worked hard to save. If it's been weighing on you, you're not alone. A University of Guelph survey of more than 1,100 Canadian farmers found that 45% were dealing with high stress, and many met the criteria for anxiety or depression.

Reaching out is a sign of strength. Talk to a friend, a neighbour, your vet, or a professional. And check in on the people around you, too.
