This is a great post from our friends at Warman Hearing Clinic. When you’re thinking about purchasing hearing aids, you should make sure the devices are “unlocked.”

Why would “locked” hearing aids cause a problem?

Well, for example, if you moved from Saskatoon to Warman, it would be more convenient to visit Warman Hearing Clinic! With “unlocked” devices, you would be able to do just that. If you have “locked” devices, you have to return to the same provider from where they were purchased.

It is more convenient and less headache for you! That’s why we dispense only unlocked devices.

UNLOCKED HEARING AIDS🔓

Warman Hearing Clinic works with all the major hearing aid manufacturers, dispensing “unlocked” devices.

‼️WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?👇🏼

Basically, a locked hearing aid is a device that can only be programmed/adjusted by the original place that you purchased it from. This is locking anyone else out from being able to adjust or re-program these hearing aids, making it a huge disadvantage to the patient.

In some cases, big box retailers or certain companies may dispense “locked” hearing aids. This means patients can only return to the original provider for adjustments or re-programming.

What happens if you end up moving? What happens if your favourite provider leaves that clinic? What happens if you’re seeking a second opinion? What happens if the clinic you purchased from goes out of business? What if you have to wait 6 months to be seen at the original clinic for an adjustment? What happens if you’re unhappy with the customer service experience?

Your options for where to take your existing hearing aids will be extremely limited and most patients only learn their hearing aids are locked long after investing in them.

Some common companies dispensing locked hearing aids: Costco, Beltone, Miracle-Ear, to name a few. So ask the question upfront, “Are your hearing aids locked?”
