Deep tissue is a popular term in Massage Therapy.
But...
Have you heard of Visceral Manipulation?
"Visceral Manipulation is a manual therapy consisting of gentle, specifically placed manual forces that encourage normal mobility, tone and inherent tissue motion of the viscera, their connective tissue, and the areas of the body where physiological motion has been impaired."
When I do visceral manipulation in my treatments i use my hand to listen. Which is an anatomy-based evaluation technique whereby the hand is attracted to areas of dysfunction.
This allows me to communicate with the body I am working with, to maximize the efficiency of our treatment time.
When I release visceral restrictions, im working through the outer layer to get to the elastic component in the core /or the fluid environment within the body. Increasing the slide and glide of the connective tissues so they can function optionally. Which allows the body to self correct.
I used to do mostly Deep Tissue and it has its place. (This is why pre- treatment evaluation is so important.) Now I do a lot of Visceral Manipulation. It's more safe and effective because of the precision instead of force.
Deep neurovascular spasms can be released which greatly benefits our musculoskeletal system.
