Chewing isn’t just for eating…it’s actually a workout for the jaw, tongue, and facial muscles! People who only eat soft foods miss important opportunities to build strong oral muscles.

Here are 10 crunchy foods that encourage active chewing (aka. Your “gym equipment” for the mouth):

🥕 Carrot sticks
🍎 Apple slices
🥦 Raw broccoli
🫑 Bell pepper strips
🥒 Cucumber sticks
🫛 Snap peas
🥖 Toast or crusty bread
🥨 Pretzels
🥜 Nuts (age appropriate)
🍐 Firm pear slices

Why crunchy foods matter:
✔️ Strengthen jaw muscles
✔️ Help develop mature chewing patterns
✔️ Support speech and oral development
✔️ Encourage using the molars for chewing

💡 Tip: 10-15mins of focused eating AND chewing on both sides of your mouth for balanced muscle development.

A speech or myofunctional therapist can help guide safe chewing skills!

Who is speech & myofunctional therapy for? 👀

Ages…
2 🧸
16 🎤
48 😴
73 💪

Answer: ALL OF THE ABOVE.

I see clients from 2 to 73 years old because age doesn’t matter when it comes to:

✨ Clearer sounds
✨ Stronger tongues
✨ Increasing language
✨ Healthier vocal cords
✨ Confident social skills
✨ Easier chewing & swallowing

Wet kisses from your toddler?
Sore tongue after Valentine’s weekend? 👀

Let’s talk muscles.

Puckering isn’t automatic. It requires:
• Lip strength
• Lip rounding
• Jaw stability
• Coordination

If lips can’t close firmly or round well, kids often default to an open-mouth ‘wet kiss.’ It’s not bad. It’s not wrong. It just tells us their oral muscles may still be developing or they need some help to strengthen those.

And for adults?
Your tongue is a muscle. Limited mobility or low endurance can mean fatigue, tension, or soreness with prolonged use. So if things feel tight, awkward, or tiring… it might not be you. It might be your frenulum.

Functional tongues matter at every age 👅🤗

࿎ Happy V Day 😘

✨ The answer: weave them into your daily routine!
