June is National Stroke Month, a time to raise awareness about stroke prevention, treatment, and recovery.

At Sault Area Hospital (SAH), we are proud to recognize the important work of our Stroke Program, which includes the Stroke Prevention Clinic and the Acute Stroke Unit (3C), as well as a close association with the inpatient rehabilitation unit Our teams provide timely, specialized care for patients experiencing stroke and work closely to support recovery and rehabilitation. SAH is also a proud member of the Northeastern Ontario Stroke Network, collaborating with partners across the region to strengthen and improve stroke care for all communities we serve.

Stroke can happen suddenly, and knowing the signs can save a life. The most common indicators can be remembered with the FAST acronym:
• Face: Drooping or uneven smile
• Arms: Weakness in one arm or inability to raise both arms evenly
• Speech: Slurred or strange speech, or inability to speak
• Time: Call 9-1-1 immediately, and make note of time last known well

There are also additional, less common signs of stroke that are often missed, including:
• Sudden vision changes such as blurred or double vision
• Sudden severe headache, often with other symptoms
• Numbness, usually on one side of the body
• Problems with balance or coordination

Not everyone will experience all of the FAST signs of stroke. If you experience any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately—do not wait. Quick action can make a critical difference in outcomes and recovery.

This Stroke Month, SAH encourages everyone to learn the signs, share the message, and help save lives in our community.
