Why Do You Wake Up Tired?

Waking up tired—even after a full night’s sleep—may be linked to inconsistent sleep habits, stress, dehydration, poor sleep quality, or an underlying health concern.

Try these simple steps:

- Keep a consistent sleep and wake schedule.

- Limit screen time before bed.

- Stay hydrated throughout the day.

- Create a cool, quiet, comfortable sleep environment.

- Avoid caffeine late in the day.

- Track ongoing symptoms such as snoring, morning headaches, or daytime fatigue.

If tiredness continues or affects your daily activities, speak with a healthcare professional to identify the possible cause and find the right next steps.

🏊‍♀️ Stay Safe While Swimming This Summer

At Scarborough Village Medical Center, we want you and your family to enjoy the water while staying protected from common swimming-related illnesses.

Pools, hot tubs, lakes, and splash pads can sometimes spread germs that cause diarrhea, skin irritation, ear infections, and other health concerns. The good news is that a few simple habits can lower your risk:

🚿 Shower before and after swimming to help wash away germs.
🤒 Do not swim if you have diarrhea or an upset stomach.
💧 Avoid swallowing pool or lake water.
🩹 Keep open cuts and wounds covered with a waterproof bandage.
👂 Dry your ears well after swimming to help prevent swimmer’s ear.
🧒 Take children for bathroom breaks often and change diapers away from the water.
🧪 Check that pools are properly maintained and follow posted safety rules.

If you develop symptoms like diarrhea, ear pain, rash, eye irritation, or fever after swimming, seek medical advice.

When to Visit a Walk-In Clinic vs. the Emergency Room 🏥

Not sure where to go for care? Here's a quick guide.

🩺 Walk-In Clinic — for minor, non-life-threatening issues:

Colds, flu, sore throat, cough

Minor cuts, sprains, mild aches

Ear/eye infections, rashes, UTIs

Mild allergic reactions, minor burns

Prescription refills

🚨 Emergency Room — for life-threatening symptoms:

Chest pain/pressure, signs of heart attack

Sudden numbness, slurred speech, facial drooping (stroke signs)

Severe trouble breathing

Uncontrolled bleeding or deformed fractures

Head injury with confusion or loss of consciousness

High fever (103°F+) with severe pain

💡 Rule of thumb: If it's uncomfortable but stable, choose a walk-in clinic. If it's sudden, severe, or could be life-threatening, go to the ER or call 911 right away.

Air Quality Advisory: Heavy Wildfire Smoke ⚠️

Smoke from northwestern Ontario is causing very poor air quality and reduced visibility across the region. Everyone’s health is at risk during these conditions, especially young children, seniors, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic illnesses. Please take precautions to protect your respiratory health today.
Cancel or reschedule outdoor sports and activities.
Keep windows and doors closed to protect indoor air quality.
Wear a well-fitting N95 respirator mask if you must go outside.
Check in on vulnerable family members and neighbors.
Seek immediate medical help for wheezing, chest pain, or severe coughing.
While mild symptoms like eye irritation or a slight cough are common, do not hesitate to seek medical assistance if you are having a medical emergency. Stay indoors, prioritize staying cool, and stay safe!

Picnic Safely: How to Avoid Summer Food Poisoning 🍉

Body:
Warm weather creates the perfect environment for harmful bacteria to grow quickly in food, making food poisoning far more common during summer picnics, barbecues, and outdoor gatherings. A few simple food safety habits can keep your family protected all season long:

Know the symptoms – Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever usually appear within hours to days of eating contaminated food.

Chill food promptly – Don't leave food out for more than one hour when temperatures exceed 32°C (90°F), and refrigerate leftovers immediately.

Keep raw and cooked foods separate – Use different cutting boards and utensils for raw meat, poultry, and seafood to avoid cross-contamination.

Cook to safe temperatures – Use a food thermometer to confirm meat, poultry, and seafood are cooked thoroughly, especially on the grill.

Wash hands and surfaces often – Clean hands, utensils, and countertops with soap and water before and after handling food.

Pack smart for outings – Use a cooler with ice packs kept below 4°C (40°F) and avoid opening it too often when transporting food.

💡 Tip: High-risk groups—including young children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems—should be extra cautious with food handling this summer.

Experiencing ongoing stomach symptoms after a summer meal? Don't wait it out—schedule a visit to rule out serious infection.
