Why we love using gardening in autism therapy 🌱

What looks like “just gardening” is actually an opportunity to build fine motor skills, executive functioning, communication, sensory processing, problem-solving, and independence … all through meaningful, hands-on play.

The best therapy often looks like play because children learn best when they’re engaged, motivated, and having fun. 💚

📌 Save this activity for your next therapy session, classroom, or at-home learning experience.

“Just stop what you’re doing” is one of the hardest things you can ask an autistic child to do.

The autistic brain is wired to go deep.

When focus is interrupted abruptly, it can disrupt regulation, language, motor planning, and emotional processing.

Because the nervous system needs time to finish processing, disengage, reorient, recover.

Here’s what’s actually happening inside the autistic nervous system and what helps instead.

Save this for the next transition. đź’ś

Interoception shapes more than most people realize.

Many autistic children experience internal body signals differently …which can shape regulation, participation, and meltdowns.

When we understand the body, we change how we support the child.

“Use your words” sounds simple.
But communication isn’t always available in the moment.

When autistic kids are overwhelmed, stressed, or overloaded…
access to language can drop.

That’s often mistaken as refusal.
But many kids aren’t choosing silence.

And communication doesn’t stop just because speech does.

Movement, scripting, AAC, silence, leaving the room—
it all means something.

The shift is asking:
“What’s making communication hard right now?”
instead of
“Why won’t they talk?”

Support regulation first. Then language follows. ✨

The “easy” child is not always okay.

Quiet can be masking. Compliance can be effort.

Then it comes out later…
After school meltdowns are not random.
They are the release.

Save this to rethink “easy.”

More prompting ≠ more learning. It often means less autonomy.

The more we prompt…
the less they initiate.

Pause before you step in > That pause matters.

đź’ľ Save this for the moment you feel the urge to jump in >> the pause might be the most supportive thing you do.
