We’ve reached an incredible milestone: 100,000 tick submissions on eTick!

What began in 2017 as a pilot project in Quebec, with just 180 tick submissions (most of them from veterinary clinics) has grown into a Canada-wide citizen science success story. Starting in 2019, eTick expanded to Ontario, New Brunswick, and then other provinces and territories. By 2021, participation had truly taken off as the platform became available across the country!

As tick encounters become an increasing concern for many Canadians, tools like eTick are more important than ever. Every submission helps researchers and public health professionals better understand where ticks are found and how their distribution is changing, while also providing Canadians with expert tick identification and information to help you make informed decisions.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed over the years and helped us reach this remarkable milestone. Reaching 100,000 tick submissions reflects the growing value of having a trusted tick identification and surveillance tool available for free to Canadians!

Nous avons franchi un cap incroyable : 100 000 soumissions de tiques sur eTick!

Ce qui a commencé en 2017 comme un projet pilote au Québec, avec seulement 180 soumissions de tiques (dont la plupart provenaient de cliniques vétérinaires), est devenu une véritable succès de science citoyenne à l’échelle du Canada. À partir de 2019, eTick s’est étendu à l’Ontario, au Nouveau-Brunswick, puis à d’autres provinces et territoires. En 2021, la participation a véritablement pris son envol, alors que la plateforme est devenue accessible partout au pays!

Alors que les rencontres avec des tiques suscitent de plus en plus de préoccupations chez de nombreux Canadiens, des outils comme eTick sont plus importants que jamais. Chaque soumission aide les chercheurs et les professionnels de la santé publique à mieux comprendre où se trouvent les tiques et comment leur répartition évolue, tout en permettant aux Canadiens d’obtenir une identification experte des tiques et des renseignements utiles pour prendre des décisions éclairées.

Merci à toutes les personnes qui ont contribué au fil des ans et qui nous ont aidés à atteindre ce jalon remarquable. Le fait d’avoir atteint 100 000 soumissions de tiques témoigne de l’importance croissante d’avoir accès gratuitement à un outil fiable d’identification et de surveillance des tiques pour les Canadiennes et Canadiens!

Found a tick? Ticks found on people, animals, or in the environment can be submitted through eTick.ca.

If you or your pet have been bitten by a tick, please contact your health-care provider or the NL HealthLine (811) to be connected to the appropriate resources before removing the tick.

Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services and eTick are collaborating to improve our understanding of ticks and tick-borne diseases across the province. This program supports ongoing surveillance of ticks and tick-borne diseases and does not indicate an increase in risk.

Submit a tick through eTick by following the photo guidelines on their app or website and completing their online submission form.

After submitting: Save your tick! Package and freeze your tick. If your tick is requested for surveillance purposes, eTick will send an email with shipping instructions.
