is proud to announce a new $1M partnership with Healthy Canadians will help expand eTick, the community-science platform developed by Dr. Jade Savage, strengthening tick surveillance across Canada.

This three-year partnership strengthens national tick surveillance efforts and highlights how research at Bishop’s is contributing to public health across Canada.

What started as curiosity-driven research has grown into a nationwide initiative making a real impact.

When the temperature hits 35–40°C, dressing from head to toe to walk in the forest to protect yourself from ticks is not exactly appealing. 😓

But it's still important to be cautious, especially because of tick nymphs! These tiny, active "teenage" ticks are out and active right now. They can bite and depending on the species, potentially transmit pathogens. Because they're much smaller than adult ticks, they’re also harder to spot on your skin.

Here are a few tips to help prevent tick bites:
✅ Stick to clear, open trails to minimize contact with vegetation
✅ Use an effective repellent (like DEET or icaridin)
✅ Do a full-body tick check when you return, especially in warm, moist areas (like behind the knees, under the arms, behind the ears, etc.)
✅ Wear light-colored clothing (even if it's lightweight) to make it easier to spot ticks, including the tiny nymphs

👖 Ideally, wear long pants, socks and closed shoes, even if it's tough in the heat!

Quand le mercure frôle les 35-40°C, s’habiller de la tête aux pieds pour aller marcher en forêt afin de se protéger des tiques, c’est loin d’être tentant. 😓

Mais il faut tout de même faire attention, surtout pour éviter les nymphes de tiques! Très petites et actives en ce moment, ces tiques en phase « adolescence » peuvent vous piquer et selon l'espèce, possiblement transmettre des pathogènes. Comme elles sont beaucoup plus petites que les tiques adultes, elles sont aussi plus difficiles à repérer sur la peau.

Voici quelques conseils pour éviter les piqûres de tiques:
✅ Restez sur les sentiers dégagés pour limiter le contact avec la végétation
✅ Appliquez un répulsif efficace (DEET, icaridine)
✅ Faites un examen corporel pour repérer les tiques au retour, surtout aux endroits chauds et humides du corps (derrière les genoux, sous les bras, derrière les oreilles, etc.)
✅ Portez des vêtements clairs (même légers) pour mieux repérer les tiques, incluant les petites nymphes

👖 L’idéal reste toujours de se vêtir de pantalons longs, puis de porter des bas et des souliers fermés, même si ce n’est pas évident quand il fait très chaud!
