Life can be challenging and even complicated, but it isn’t meant to be done alone. We believe it really does. In fact, science prov

es it. At Onyx, not only do we understand the concept of the village, but we also embody it in our practice and philosophy. We believe that healthy relationships and strong supports are essential to wellbeing and quality of life. Our caring and compassionate team of therapists provide a safe space to unload some of the mental weights you have been carrying. We are here to support you and your loved ones with whatever you are dealing with, from everyday stressors to major transitions. Together, we will work toward meeting your therapeutic goals.

Today is International Youth Day, and it is an important reminder that youth mental health deserves our attention, care, and support.

Recent conversations and reports across Canada continue to show that many children and teens are carrying a lot. Stress, pressure, anxiety, loneliness, and emotional overwhelm can show up in ways that are easy to miss, especially during phases when they seem distant, quiet, or like they do not want to talk.

These notes may seem small. You might think your child or teen already knows these things. But they still need to hear them from you.

No matter what phase they are in, your voice still matters. Your encouragement matters. Your presence matters.

A simple note that says “I’m proud of you,” “I’m here if you need me,” or “I’m grateful for you” can go further than you think. Small reminders of love, safety, and support can make a real impact.

This International Youth Day, consider leaving a note for the young person in your life. It does not have to be big to matter. 🤍

A secure attachment style is not about never feeling hurt, anxious, uncertain, or afraid of being let down.

It is about having a steadier sense of safety within yourself and in your relationships. It can help you believe that your needs matter, that conflict does not always mean abandonment, and that closeness can exist without losing yourself.

For many adults, secure attachment is something that has to be rebuilt slowly. That might mean noticing the patterns you fall into, challenging the old beliefs that tell you your needs are “too much,” learning how to regulate your emotions when you feel triggered, and practicing clearer communication with people who feel safe.

It is not always easy work, but it is possible. With time, support, and healthier relationship experiences, attachment patterns can begin to shift.

We will say it until the end of time: your therapist is not sitting there judging you. Not once. Not ever.

Here are some of the things we are probably actually thinking during sessions, and we can assure you, it is almost never what you think it is.

More often than not, we are internally celebrating your wins, noticing your growth, and seeing the strength in you before you can fully see it in yourself.

And yes, sometimes we are also trying very hard to hold in a cough, sneeze, or random thought like, “I hope they know I am still listening, my face just did something weird.”

We are rooting for you! 🤗🤎

One thing about Tania: she has great taste in shows and movies, is an anime fan, and brings so much creativity into what she does. 🎨🫧

She loves crafting, colouring, and finding creative ways to connect. If that sounds like you or your teen, Tania might be a great fit.

Saying “I’m overstimulated” has become common online and in everyday conversations. But it is important to understand that everyday stress or feeling overwhelmed is not always the same as overstimulation.

Overstimulation is a real sensory and nervous system experience that can be especially common for neurodivergent people, including autistic and ADHD individuals. It can happen when the brain and body are taking in too much input at once, like noise, light, touch, crowds, conversations, or too many demands.

Using the term thoughtfully helps protect its meaning for people who regularly experience overstimulation and may need support, accommodations, or space to regulate.

At Onyx, we offer neurodiversity-affirming care. If you are struggling with frequent overstimulation or difficulty managing your triggers, reach out. We are here to support you.

Happy International Day of Friendship! 🤗

Friendship can be one of the quiet ways we care for our mental health.

It can remind us that we belong. It can help children practice kindness, repair, boundaries, and confidence. It can help adults feel less alone in seasons that feel busy, heavy, or disconnected.

Meaningful connection does not have to be complicated. Sometimes it starts with a small message, an invitation, a walk, a playdate, or the courage to be a little more open.

Today is a gentle reminder to reach out, check in, and create space for connection.

And if friendship, loneliness, social anxiety, or helping your child build healthy relationships feels difficult right now, therapy could help. 💫

One of Kylie’s focus areas in her practice is working with teens. 🌱

She believes that helping teens feel comfortable in therapy starts with being human: making space for mistakes, rolling with resistance, and creating an open, nonjudgmental environment where they can show up as they are.

Kylie also wants teens to know that therapy is a supportive, confidential space. Your therapist is there to help, not to “blab” everything to your parents.

If you’re a parent considering therapy for your teen, consider booking with Kylie at Onyx.

Children often communicate through play before they can fully explain what they are feeling. 🧸

That does not mean the play is random or meaningless. In therapy, play can become a gentle doorway into emotions, experiences, worries, and needs that may be hard for a child to express directly.

A child might build, draw, imagine, act something out, tell a story, or return to the same theme again and again. With the support of a therapist, those moments can help create understanding, safety, and emotional growth.

At Onyx, our child therapists are play therapy-informed and use these tools thoughtfully within child therapy sessions.

Happy International Self-Care Day! We’ve packed a little self-care picnic for you. 🧺💌

Nothing too complicated. Nothing that asks you to completely reset your life. Just a few gentle reminders that caring for yourself can be simple, slow, and meaningful.

A walk through your neighbourhood. A snack in the sunshine. A few pages of a book. A conversation with someone who feels safe. A quiet moment outside before the day ends.

Especially in the summer, when life can feel busy, social, and full of expectations, it can be helpful to come back to the small things that make your body and mind feel supported.

Small acts of care still count! What are you packing in your self-care picnic today? 🌱
