Healing doesn't always happen through life-changing moments or major breakthroughs.
Often, trauma recovery is built through the small choices we make each day—setting a boundary, taking a deep breath, asking for support, or showing ourselves compassion during difficult moments. These small wins may not always feel significant, but over time they help strengthen resilience, build confidence, and support lasting healing.
Remember, progress isn't measured by how quickly you heal—it's measured by your willingness to keep showing up for yourself.

If you've been exploring trauma support, you may have come across the terms trauma-informed care and trauma therapy. While they are connected, they are not the same thing.

Trauma-Informed Care
• Recognizes the impact trauma can have on a person's life.
• Prioritizes safety, trust, collaboration, choice, and empowerment.
• Can be integrated into healthcare, education, community services, and therapy.

Trauma Therapy
• Focuses specifically on healing the effects of trauma.
• May include trauma processing when appropriate and at a pace that feels safe.
• Uses evidence-based therapy approaches to support recovery and resilience.
Both approaches recognize the impact of trauma and aim to create safe, supportive environments where healing can occur.

Trauma can affect how our nervous system responds to stress, making it harder to feel grounded, present, or in control during challenging situations. This is where the Window of Tolerance comes in.

Your window of tolerance is the zone where you are most able to:
✔ Manage emotions effectively
✔ Think clearly and make decisions
✔ Stay connected to yourself and others
✔ Cope with life's ups and downs

When stress pushes us outside of our window, we may experience:
⬆ Hyperarousal – anxiety, panic, irritability, racing thoughts, feeling on edge
⬇ Hypoarousal – numbness, disconnection, exhaustion, shutting down, feeling "checked out"

For many individuals who have experienced trauma, the window of tolerance can become narrower as the nervous system learns to stay alert to potential threats. A goal of trauma-informed therapy is not to eliminate difficult emotions, but to help expand your window of tolerance so you can navigate life's challenges with greater flexibility, self-awareness, and confidence.

Trauma processing is the therapeutic work of understanding, exploring, and healing from traumatic experiences that continue to impact your present-day life. It isn't about reliving every detail of what happened.

Instead, trauma processing helps individuals:
✨ Make sense of their experiences
✨ Understand current patterns and reactions
✨ Reduce the emotional intensity of painful memories
✨ Develop a greater sense of safety, choice, and control
At Journey Psychology, trauma processing is approached at your pace, using trauma-informed and evidence-based therapies tailored to your unique experiences and goals.

Healing from trauma isn't about fixing what's broken—it's about understanding what helped you survive. Many of the patterns we struggle with today once served an important purpose. For example, avoidance, people-pleasing, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, or self-reliance may have developed as ways to cope with difficult experiences.

Healing involves recognizing these survival strategies with compassion, understanding how they helped, and exploring whether they continue to serve us today.

This month, we'll be exploring trauma, healing, and recovery through education, reflection, and practical tools for growth

Hello, August! A new month doesn't have to mean becoming a new person.

Instead of putting pressure on yourself to have everything figured out, consider using this month as an opportunity to check in with yourself. What do you need more of? What feels heavy? What would it look like to make a little more space for rest, connection, or self-compassion? Growth doesn't always happen through big changes. Sometimes it looks like setting a boundary, asking for support, taking a break, or simply noticing how you're feeling.

As we welcome August, we invite you to approach this month with curiosity rather than perfection. Small, intentional steps can lead to meaningful change over time.

What's one intention you're bringing into August? Share it in the comments—we'd love to hear.
If this month feels overwhelming, remember that you don't have to navigate it alone. Our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Authenticity means showing up as your true self — even when it feels uncertain or vulnerable. It involves understanding your values, honouring your needs, and allowing yourself to exist without constantly changing to meet others’ expectations. For many people, discovering what authenticity looks like for them is an ongoing process. Therapy can help create the space to explore these questions safely and without judgment.

Self-esteem is not something you either “have” or “don’t have”, it’s something that’s shaped over time by how you speak to yourself, how you treat yourself, and what you allow yourself to believe. 🤍

Some days it may feel steady, and other days it may feel harder to hold onto. That’s okay. Self-esteem is a practice, not a fixed trait.

It begins with noticing your inner dialogue. Are you speaking to yourself with the same kindness you would offer someone you care about? Are you allowing space for mistakes, growth, and being imperfectly human?

It also grows when you recognize your strengths, even the quiet ones. The ways you show up, keep going, care for others, or try again after things feel difficult all matter more than you might realize.

Building self-esteem can also mean setting boundaries, honoring your needs, and allowing yourself to take up space without apology.

At Journey Psychology, we understand that self-esteem is deeply connected to your experiences, relationships, and the way you’ve learned to see yourself over time. And while it can feel fragile at times, it can also be rebuilt, with patience, support, and self-compassion.

Setting boundaries can feel uncomfortable, especially if you’re used to prioritizing other people’s needs before your own.
But boundaries are an important way to protect your time, energy, and emotional wellbeing. They help create relationships that feel more balanced and respectful.

Learning how to set and communicate boundaries is something many people work on in therapy. With practice and support, it becomes easier to honour your own needs while still maintaining meaningful connections.

Boundaries are not about pushing people away — they are about creating relationships that feel safe, balanced, and respectful.
