Hastings Lake Animal Hospital

Hastings Lake Animal Hospital Dr. Karen Allen & Associates. Proudly 100% Canadian owned & operated. Full service animal hospital offering quality veterinary care for cats, dogs and farm pets.

One evening at a dinner party one of our good friends posed the question to the group "What would you do if you won the lotto for $10 million today?". Everybody in the group was quick to rattle off loans they would pay off, things they would buy for themselves and loved ones, trips they would take and charities they would support. Most importantly, they all said "I would quit my job tomorrow!". I

was the only one at the table who said I would do all the same things except I wouldn't quit my job. I said I would invest in my veterinary practise and continue practising. Anybody who knows me would not be even a little bit surprised by my response. I absolutely love what I do and have never felt like I have worked a day in my life. Until that dinner party, I had not realized what a gift I had, to love my work. I want to spend the remainder of my career practising in my own community and contributing something back to this wonderful group of people who have shaped this lovely rural neighbourhood. Our community is a joy to live in, a paradise for our children and full of people who love animals as much as I do.

It took A DECADE to get here but we were so proud of Bruce Wayne today! He walked right into the clinic wagging his tail, cooperated perfectly for his vaccinations, ear treatment and senior blood panel and ….🥁🥁🥁🥁…he finally took treats from me! 💃🏻💃🏻❤️❤️

Bruce Wayne’s first visit was in the parking lot and most definitely a “visual exam only”👀. He had his opinions about veterinarians and we were not about to change his opinion with a few liver treats and some gabapentin and trazodone. No way!!

Then he slowly graduated to getting into the clinic - albeit with some Bruce Wayne drama. He’s quite an accomplished vocalist he’ll have you know🎶🎶. Grammy worthy in fact!

We were all very worried about getting Bruce Wayne into surgery to have a soft tissue sarcoma excised from his elbow in 2024. That visit was a little rough and on recovery the only way we could get Bruce Wayne to settle was one of our staff sat on the porch outside with him while he waited for his dad to make an early pick up.

But today was zero drama. No vocal gymnastics. No gymnastics period for Bruce Wayne or us!

Shout out to Bruce Wayne’s amazing owners who have so patiently supported him through all his veterinary visits. Amazing job💫❤️

At about 5:30pm on 630 just east of Sherwood Park yesterday two lanes of traffic each direction were 🏁whizzing🏁 by and a mama duck decided to lead her newly hatched 🐥chicks🐥 across the road right in front of us….disaster struck.

The vehicle in front of us was unable to avoid the hen and one duckling…we watched the other ducklings panic and scurry back into the long grass in the median.

My daughter and I circled around with our flashers on to the accident scene pulling onto the shoulder. We were able to find a break in traffic to get onto the median to search for the ducklings. I’m sure the RCMP would not have been happy 🙄🙈 but we just couldn’t leave those babies stranded.

By some small miracle my daughter was able hear them cheeping and we found them huddled together and were able to scoop them up one by one. The ducklings kept coming….five….six…seven…and eight was a bolter!! We wrangled them all up and couldn’t find anything to contain them so I emptied my tote bag and we snuggled them in there. Fortunately I don’t use expensive designer bags!! 👛👜(Although my daughter just laughed at that and said “mom you DEFINITELY would have still put the ducklings in it”). True!!

We resisted any urge to handle them further - they are absolutely adorable - kept them covered and headed back to the clinic while we waited for WildNorth to give us instructions. Later that evening they transferred to Pulse Veterinary Emerg who partners with WildNorth and this AM they went to WildNorth for rehab and release once they’ve grown.

None were injured thankfully🙏

Their mom was a smallish duck, all silver/light beige with no colour or wing bars that I noticed on my brief roadside exam of her. Not sure what kind of ducks these are? Anyone know? Maybe Gadwall duck??

WildNorth was 💫amazing💫 - they called me right back and had a plan for these babies and assured us we had done the right thing. We wondered if we should have left them for dad to care, being well aware of WildNorth’s many campaigns to leave babies alone in the wild so their parents can care for them. (Dad was nowhere to be seen though). Apparently the drakes don’t have very good survival outcomes without their hens to orchestrate duckling care. And unlike Canada Geese, ducks do not readily accept chicks to foster.

Wishing this sweet little crew all the best and huge thankyou to all the staff and volunteers at WildNorth💕💕🙏🙏

🐈🐈‍⬛💕HLAH Farm Cat Spay & Neuter Program 2026 is OPEN!💕🐈‍⬛🐈

We are running things differently this year because we are very lucky to have not one but TWO wonderful young 🩺DVMs🩺 who have joined our team and they are keen to spay and neuter!

💫We will be wrangling up our community farm cats with a few new twists for 2026:

*we used to do about 60 cats in one day, then we started doing about 100 cats in the month of October and this year....🥁🥁drum roll🥁🥁…the program will run July 15th to November 30th!

*the HLAH Farm Cat Clinic continues to be focused on population control of 🐈‍⬛🚜FARM 🚜🐈 cats in our community. We have sterilized over a thousand cats through this program but we have barely made a dent in the overpopulation of cats in our community.

***THIS PROGRAM IS NOT FOR HOUSE PET CATS***

*☎️schedule by calling the clinic to book (as opposed to our usual online booking for cat clinic) 780-662-2227☎️

*we can offer add-on vaccinations, deworming, ear mite treatment, Feline Leukemia and FIV testing, microchips and cat bite abscess treatment for additional fee

*this program is not for feral cats, unowned cats or pet cats that live indoor or indoor/outdoor

The ABVMA Marketing Guidelines do not permit the advertisement of fees so please call us for information on fees and any questions about the program.

Check out our website at www.hastingslakevet.com for the consent form and more information (hopefully our 💻website guys have it up - we've kind of jumped the gun on them lol!)

🙏Thankyou Strathcona County!!🙏🙏
The county has responded to my calls for the initial road collapse and then better barriers basically immediately. I know they’re super busy with many road issues but I really appreciate it!❤️

🚧🚧ROAD CLOSED🚧🚧
No…you can’t go over it…unless you have a hover craft.
No…you absolutely can’t go under it.
No…you definitely can’t go through it as demonstrated.
No…you can’t go around it despite some people driving over the very unstable shoulder (it’s been completely undermined by the water) - presumable these are the same people moving the barriers. Why?🤷‍♀️
Let’s be safe everyone.
Our clients and staff all need to travel on the west section of Twp Rd 512.
Nobody but the four families who live right there need to be anywhere near the washed out section.
Please use Highway 14.
And no, this is not an AI rendered photo …. I wish it was.
