For many older adults, brain health and independent function are high on their list of priorities. Those who have dementia, Parkinson's or other complex medical conditions may need an extra hand.

At the Bridge, our goal is to provide intentional programming to stimulate the body and brain and to slow the progression of cognitive decline. With activities geared towards participant interests, our affordable private pay day program ensures a good day for you and your loved one.

This is such a huge part of the the "why" for me as an AT. Although I don't directly impact what happens on the floor, I am there to make sure my athletes have the best chance to perform. Whether it be on the side lines, in the dressing room or at a medal ceremony, I can promise you that your athletic therapist will be there, rooting for you.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of this journey .

The spinal cord is essentially a river that allows electrical impulses from the brain to flow to the extremities. Peripheral nerves and nerve roots are the streams branching from the river, providing flow to areas farther away from the spine. This allows for voluntary and involuntary movements, pain, sensation of touch and perception of hot and cold.

When an injury creates a "dam" in the spinal cord river, the extremities can no longer receive input from the brain, causing things like paralysis and loss of sensation.

In recent years it has become more clear that peripheral nerves can slowly heal, taking over the jobs of nerves impacted by injury, developing new routes for flow and returning some function.

Unfortunately, if the river itself dries up, it is a lot harder to return to the same level of function.

The analogy of the river is a simple way to understand why some spine or nerve injuries are worse than others.

We've all done it before, jumping into a rec league game and thinking our bodies are invincible! Here are a few tips from an Athletic Therapist on how to prevent injury as a Weekend Warrior. βšΎοΈπŸ’

1) Don't discount your warm up!
Light cardio, some dynamic movements targeting the muscles you'll be using, and maybe even a bit of stretching will make all the difference in your body's ability to withstand punishment.

2) If you're a gym goer, make sure some of your training replicates the demands of your sport.
Fast twitch muscle fibers and slow twitch muscle fibers are trained differently. If all you do is lift heavy during the week, no matter the warm up, there's a good chance you may pull something if you try to sprint during the weekend. Work in exercises that require fast and repetitive movements to prevent speed related injury.

3) Water, water, water!
All too often, I've seen folks only drinking beer during rec games. But proper hydration not only prevents heat related injuries, but will better allow your muscles to work without injury.
