We did it - another crazy year of physiotherapy in Squamish!

Thanks for trusting me with your injuries, aches and pains, and involving me on your rehab journey. I am lucky to have such a wonderful set of clients in this little mountain town, who motivate me, and are truly my greatest teachers.

To my colleagues and fellow Squamish healthcare practitioners, you have created such a supportive, warm community here. Let's continue to build each other up and learn together❤️

Have a restful holiday and see you all in 2024 ✌️

May is National Physiotherapy month, and after I blinked and half the month went by, this is how physiotherapy has helped me over the years:

✨rehab after an ACL tear from soccer
✨neck pain and wry neck from muscular imbalances
✨hip pain and weaknesses from postpartum running
✨pelvic floor physio after two traumatic deliveries
✨ankle sprains and foot injuries from soccer and ultimate frisbee

How has physio helped you??

I'm back to work, Squamish!

I blinked, and a year went by! I am excited to be back at for all your physiotherapy needs, including pelvic floor physio, orthopaedic and sports injuries, ICBC and WorkSafe claims.

I love to look at the whole body, including old injuries and how it all interacts with your current symptoms. I might suggest IMS (dry needling), hands-on manual therapy and targeted exercises for you to do with me and at home. I'll be starting up with limited availability, but moving towards full time in the next 2 months (yay for squamish daycare!).

BACK TO WORK ✨

Hi Squamish, I am happy to announce that I am returning from my maternity leave on January 18 🎉

Can't wait to see you all in the new year! My schedule is live if you can plan your life as far ahead as January.

6 month postpartum & half way through my maternity leave! Here are some fun facts🤩

✨I’m finally running more consistently and it’s feeling great. I’m only running 4-5km (without stopping) and now at a bit faster pace. I had been getting some pelvic pain symptoms earlier on, so I’ve been taking it slow and working through that appropriately.
✨I’ve re-taken up mountain biking and it’s been humbling to say the least. Being “bad” at a sport is a challenge for me 😆
✨I’m really enjoying the mental break from work, although I do miss my career at the same time. I think burnout in our profession is so real, and taking a break keeps you fresh and motivated. I still spend my hikes listening to physio podcasts and I’m working through some online courses, right now ‘The Female Athlete’ with Antony Lo.
✨I’m planning to return to work in early 2023, but you know, that depends on childcare. Oh Squamish.
✨My baby is an early crawler, and she’s already on the move. Life is gonna get even busier ✌️🙃

Reflecting a bit as we do at this time of year, and over 7 years now working as a physiotherapist. 3 weeks left before I take a mat leave hiatus, and boy did my practice and approach to care change after returning after my last mat leave. I know it’s hard to explain how you change after having kids, but I think it’s really reflected in how I work as a physiotherapist. I’m stronger, more compassionate, more flexible, more human. More soft skills, less courses to learn all the things.

It’s been a busy benefits season, an even busier year, and I’m proud of myself for learning to juggle the working-mom-life (most of the time…). It’s not always easy to keep up with professional development, new research, running a physiotherapy practice, working out, having a social life, raising a toddler and juggling the daycare illnesses and time off work, being an awesome wife, oh and growing another human too. It hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows. (Hence why I never have the energy to post on IG 😛)

I have 3 weeks of work left and although my body is feeling pretty done with it by now, my brain and my heart don’t want to stop. I truly love my job, profession and workplace

Wishing everyone a happy holidays, mine will be full of naps, cookies and the occasional attempt to still cross country ski 😆

Daily reminder to get out, enjoy the sun, and get some exercise! It’s not always easy with a little person in tow, and it may not be the best workout in the world, but at least it’s something!🏃‍♀️

Want to talk running postpartum? Although my daughter is almost 2.5, postpartum is for life! Whether you had a baby a few months ago or a few years ago, there are considerations in running form and biomechanics that may have changed, core and hip/glut strength, and pelvic floor strength and coordination. Dysfunctions in these areas often show up in the form of knee pain, hip pain, etc.

It’s also great to show my daughter how important exercise is for our physical and mental health and hopefully encourage some healthy habits later in her life!

Bring on more sunny days please! ☀️

May is National Physiotherapy month!

How has physiotherapy helped you get out of pain, reach your goals or recover from injury?

Over the years, these are some of the issues that physiotherapy has helped me with:
-neck pain, related to my weak scapular stabilizers and posture
-partial ACL tear, from soccer, fully recovered conservatively (no surgery)
-glut tendinopathy, related to running and weak core/hip stability as a new mom
-a few ankle sprains, back when I used to spend every free moment playing competitive ultimate frisbee
-pelvic floor physio during pregnancy and postpartum
-scoliosis/back pain related to muscle imbalances as a very one-side dominant competitive teenage biathlete/xc skier

Happy National Physiotherapy month!

CESEAREAN BIRTH RECOVERY ✨

Did you know that NO abdominal muscles are actually cut during a c-section? They are simply moved to the side to help maintain abdominal wall function🤯

C-sections are often performed for emergency reasons to ensure health and safety for both mom and baby. They are the MOST commonly performed surgery in Canada, but rehab and recovery is often over looked. An orthopaedic surgeon would never tell someone who’s had an ACL surgery to “rest for 6 weeks and then you are cleared for exercise!”

Check out my new blog post on how a pelvic floor physiotherapist can help with preparation, early post op strategies, scar care management and appropriate exercise prescription, long before the 6 week mark!
