🎧 What if I told you your birth playlist could change how your brain experiences labour pain?

This isn't just about creating a peaceful vibe.

One of the most overlooked birth tools is **music**—because the sounds you hear during labour can influence your brain, your hormones, and even the way your body perceives pain.

Here's what's happening inside your body...

When you feel safe, calm, and connected, your brain naturally shifts into **alpha and theta brainwave states**—the same states associated with meditation, deep relaxation, and the focused, inward rhythm many women enter during active labour.

In this state:

✨ Your body releases more **oxytocin**, the hormone that helps labour progress.

✨ Your body releases **endorphins**, your body's own natural pain medication.

✨ Your nervous system becomes less focused on fear and more able to work *with* each contraction instead of against it.

But when fear or stress takes over, adrenaline rises—which can make contractions feel more intense and disrupt labour's natural hormonal flow.

Research suggests that listening to music during labour can reduce anxiety, decrease perceived pain, and improve a mother's overall birth experience.

🎶 Build your birth playlist with intention.

Choose songs that make you feel:

* Safe.
* Powerful.
* Peaceful.
* Loved.
* Connected to your baby.

Your playlist is more than background music—it's part of creating a birth environment where your brain and body feel supported.

Reminder: Birth isn't just physical. It's neurological, hormonal, emotional, and deeply human.

BIRTH MYTH TUESDAY | “Your water breaks first when labour starts.”

MYTH: Labour always begins with your water breaking.

FACT: Most labours do not begin this way.

Only about 10–15% of pregnancies begin with the waters breaking before contractions start. For the vast majority of women, labour begins with regular contractions, and the amniotic sac stays intact well into labour—sometimes until you're fully dilated or even as your baby is being born.

So what does labour usually start with?

🌿 Contractions that become regular, longer, and stronger.

🌿 A “bloody show” or loss of the mucus plug.

🌿 Low back ache, cramping, or pelvic pressure.

🌿 A gradual feeling that your body is shifting into labour.

What if my water does break first?

If your waters release before contractions begin, it doesn't necessarily mean you need to rush to the hospital. The colour of the fluid, your baby's movements, your Group B Strep status, and your care provider's recommendations all help guide the next steps. Many women go into labour naturally within the next 24 hours.

Reminder 🤍

Birth rarely looks like it does in the movies. Every labour has its own rhythm, and understanding what's normal can replace fear with confidence.

✨ Save this post for the last weeks of pregnancy, and share it with an expecting mama who thinks labour always starts with a dramatic gush of water.
