You might find yourself craving a cigarette when you’re bored, lonely, or sad. Emotions can sometimes trigger cravings, so it is helpful to keep track of those emotions and come up with a list of non-smoking activities to do in each situation. If you make a list of things to do as a distraction, you will be prepared when the cravings hit!

Research shows that a single lapse doesn’t have to become a full relapse. Many people make multiple quit attempts before achieving long-term success, and every smoke-free day builds skills and confidence for the next one. Every quit attempt teaches you something valuable, and one cigarette does not undo all the benefits of quitting. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s getting back on track.

Thinking of quitting smoking but not sure where to start?

A SMART goal is a simple way to turn “I want to quit smoking” into a clear plan you can actually follow.

SMART stands for:
⭐️Specific (clear and focused)
⭐️Measurable (you can track it)
⭐️Achievable (realistic for you)
⭐️Relevant (meaningful to your reasons for quitting)
⭐️Timely (has a set timeframe)

SMART goals work because they help you get clear on WHAT you’re doing and WHY. When your goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely, you’re more likely to stick with it, even on the tough days.

💡A helpful tip: keep your reasons for quitting and your SMART goal somewhere visible, like in your notes app on your phone or a sticky note in your car. Small reminders can help you stay connected to your “why.”
